Album Info:

This is the prototype of the newest howitzer, the M777, nicknamed the "Triple Seven". It is a joint Army and Marine Corps project produced by BAE Land Systems. The first gun was fired at Fort Sill in January 2005. Weighing only 9,300 lbs. it replaces the 16,000 lb. M198 howitzer. The significant weight reduction is due largely to the use of titanium instead of steel in its construction. The M777 can be easily towed by a truck, airlifted by a helicopter, airdropped by parachute or two can be carried in one C-130 aircraft. The gun can be put into action in less than two minutes by its crew of seven and has a normal rate of fire of two rounds per minute and a maximum rate of five. The gun has a range of over 15 miles with standard ammunition, 18 miles with the rocket-assisted RAP round and 25 miles with the GPS-guided Excalibur round. The Triple Seven was used in Iraq and is currently in use in Afghanistan where it has been highly successful.
