These Russians were clearly not commanded competently. The column they were a part of had moved from a forested area to an open clearing... prime ambush area. Basic military tactical doctrine calls for a column on the move to send recon patrols along both sides of the clearing before the main body proceeds. Had that been done, these Russians would not have made the camera.

Judging from the tracks in the snow, the pattern of the bodies, the orientation of the dead, and the lack of prepared defensive positions, it appears that these Russians were part of a single file column that was on the move when ambushed from their left. Some died at once, while others were able to take up prone positions in a vain attempt to return fire. Given the large number of linear tracks in the snow, a large number of the column was able to escape the kill zone of the ambush, but had to leave their dead behind. I'm a retired big city CSI and teach college level evidence photography. I love deciphering old images using the evidence that is presented.
