Album Info:
Cast shortly before the beginning of the Civil War, this rare bronze rifle was made by J.R. Anderson Company at Tredegar Foundry in Richmond Virginia. The Tredegar Foundry was the largest producer of cannon in the Confederate States. The exterior appearance is identical to U.S. model 1841 6-lb. cannon while the barrel is rifled for 3-inch projectiles. A very small number of these guns were produced before the foundry discontinued them due to the shortage of copper in May 1861. The gun is marked for the State of Mississippi and probably served with the Pettus Flying Artillery Battery in the Western Theater of the Civil War. Confederate Light Artillery Sergeant ~ 1864. Throughout the Civil War, the Confederate Artillery was plagued by a shortage of cannon and artillery equipment of all types. Unlike the industrial North, the Confederacy had very few manufacturing facilities when the war began. As a result the Confederate Artillery had more small caliber and obsolete guns than their Union adversaries. Although always outgunned, the Confederate Artillery performed well led by great commanders like John Pelham, Will Pegram and E. Porter Alexander. This sergeant wears a kepi with red artillery band and a grey wool jacket. His trousers are Butternut jeans wool made by cross weaving wool and cotton. Butternut brown became an increasingly common uniform color as the supply of chemically produced grey dye was choked off by the Union naval blockade. Confederate soldiers often wore black and brown leather accouterments with natural brown being the more easily produced color. He wears a captured U.S. M1840 light artillery saber and holster holding a Confederate copy of the Colt revolver. Courtesy of the Walton Family Foundation and ARVEST Bank.
