Album Info:
The light 4-pounder cannon was first developed by the Swedish under the leadership of their warrior king, Gustavus Adolphus, in the late 1620's. The gun was designed to provide close support for the infantry by being light and easily maneuverable. Known as a battalion or field gun, it fired a 4 pound solid iron ball 1200 yards. It could also fire grapeshot and canister rounds at short range against enemy troops. In 1732 the French artillery was re-organized and standardized by Lieutenant General Florent-Jean de Valliere becoming known as the de Valierre System. The light 4-pdr cannon was standardized as the lightest of five French cannon sizes, This gun was made in Strasbourg in 1761 and bears the name of "Polux" one of the twin mythological sons of Zeus. The gun was probably one of 31 4-pdr. cannon brought to America aboard the L'Amphitrite which arrived at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on April 20, 1777. The L'Amphitrite was the first large ship to bring badly needed war supplies from France to the Continental Army. In addition to 52 cannon, she brought 20,160 cannon balls, 9,000 grenades, 6,132 muskets, 24,000 lbs. of musket balls, 12,000 lbs. of gunpowder and many other items. The French supplies, soldiers, and support were essential to winning the Revolutionary War.
