Album Info:

This unique piece of artillery equipment was used by German forward observers during World War 1 to locate targets and adjust fire from concealed positions. The observer sits in the lower seat and looks through the eyepiece, which is aligned with optics and periscope at the top of the mast. The mast is capable of telescoping to a height of 85 feet. The upper seat was probably used for changing lenses and maintenance. The only other example of this mast periscope is in the Imperial War Museum in London.
