Album Info:

Named for its developer, Emperor Napoleon III of France, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, the 12 lb. Napoleon was the most commonly used gun of the Civil War. The Napoleon had an effective range of 1,000 yards and a range of 1,680 yards at five degrees elevation. It fired solid shot, shell, case shot, and canister rounds with a 2 1/2 lb. charge of powder. The gun with its carriage and equipment weighed 2,500 lbs. and was served by a crew of eight. This gun, serial number 15, was made by the Ames Company in 1861 and is one of the estimated first thirty six Napoleons produced. The distinctive handles, known as dolphins, on top of the barrel were eliminated from all later Napoleons soon after the beginning of the war.
