Album Info:

The 62nd Field Artillery Battalion was activated in February 1941 at Fort Bliss, Texas. In August 1942 the unit was reorganized as the 62nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion and received the M7 Howitzer Motor Carriage, commonly known as the "Priest" because its machine gun cupola resembled a church pulpit. In November 1942 the 62nd landed at Casablanca in North Africa as part of 1st Armored Corps and fought in several actions against the German Afrika Corps. In Sicily the 62nd supported both the 2nd Armored Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. On D-Day the unit fired their M7s from the ships in support of the landings on Omaha Beach before landing later on 6 June 1944. In Normandy and the drive across France the 62nd normally operated in support of the 2nd Armored Division. Later, in Belgium and Germany, the battalion provided fire support for many other units including the 102nd Cavalry Group, 1st, 9th, and 78th Infantry Divisions. When the war ended the 62nd was in Zatavi Czechoslovakia.
