Album Info:
Long-range homing torpedoes failed as surface ship weapons. A helicopter large enough to carry a dipping sonar and lightweight torpedoes was too large for a frigate. To test light attack helicopters at sea the RN in 1958 drafted HMS Undaunted and installed a raised pad. Tests included landing gear on the helicopter (skids, suction pads, wheels); and could the ship guide the helicopter to drop a short-range torpedo accurately, based on the ship's sonar plot and radar plot? The Wasp naval helicopter with its swiveling wheels evolved from the tests aboard Undaunted.
