Album Info:
The 30-pdr. Parrott Rifle was the first of a number of siege and garrison rifles developed by Robert Parrott at West Point Foundry. It has a cast iron barrel with a strong wrought iron reinforcing band around the breech. The 4,200 lb. barrel fired various 4.2 inch diameter projectiles including solid shot, shell and case shot to a range of 6,700 yards. The Union Army used them with great success for bombarding Confederate fortifications as well as defending forts from enemy attack. It is mounted on a siege carriage which differed considerably from the carriages used for the lighter field artillery.
