The limber chest contains ammunition for the cannon. There were four of these chests to carry 158 rounds of ammunition for each cannon. The chest weighted 185 lbs. empty and 560 lbs. loaded. It held 32 rounds of 12 lb. ammunition, two spare cartridges, friction primers, and other back up ignition systems. Limber chests were mounted on top of either the limber or the caisson to move with the gun.
