This house was built around 1772 inside of a bend horseshoe shaped bend in the river thus the name.The owners were Senator Phillip Alston and wife Temperence.

I'm so glad to see this album. Philip Alston and Temperance Smith Alston are my ancestors. I've visited the House in the Horseshoe, but it's been a number of years. Temperance apparently died while still living there. Philip fled to Georgia--he was facing murder charges--and was shot and killed while sleeping in his cabin on the Ocmulgee River in 1791. Interesting people!
