Album Info:
This wooden form is half the foundry pattern used to cast a cannon barrel. The pattern is pressed into a wet sandbox, called a flask, to make an impression. The opposite flask is joined to complete the casting. Both wood forms are then removed, the flasks rejoined, and the molten gunmetal poured into the flask. After cooling, the bore is drilled and the trunnions machined. The vent is drilled and often a copper bushing installed to protect the priming or touch hole. The barrel is then polished for bronze barrels or painted black if iron.
