Album Info:
Known as the Schneider, this 155 mm howitzer was a World War I French gun which first saw action in August 1917. It was also produced under license in the U.S. in 1918. It originally was made with wooden wheels to be towed by a team of eight horses. Because of funding constraints between the wars, the development of a new American 155 mm howitzer was delayed. Beginning in 1936 a modification of the carriages began for motorized towing with new wheel bearings, brakes and pneumatic tires. By mid-1942 over 2,000 Schneiders had been converted. The gun saw extensive use in the first years of World War II especially in the Pacific and North Africa and in some theaters as late as 1944.
