    • Most people don't know the history of Wills Mountain in Cumberland, Maryland before the existence of "Wills Mountain Inn." Around the time of the Civil War, my great grandfather, Frederick J. Bahr, owned Wills Mountain and built this cabin on top for his wife, Margaret Kessler [see other photo], and family of eight. The cabin was just back from Lover's Leap and possibly on the later site of Wills Mountain Inn. Frederick was a well-known excentric inventor who designed hot air balloons (all hand-stitched by Margaret), described as a "wyndlass." He also built a railroad car on a track which would carry visitors to the top of Wills Mountain to enjoy his outdoor bowling alley and beer garden. None of that survives today. The B&O Railroad Magazine printed a story describing him as a local inventor with indefatigable energy. The cabin image was painted by their eldest daughter, Norma, in 1877. There is also another painting of it in existence. You can also read about Frederick Bahr in Wikipedia and Findagrave.com
