Album Info:
Invented by Englishman Sir Joseph Whitworth, these guns were made in both muzzle-loading and breech-loading vesions. The barrels were tapered steel with a hexagonal bore, which was a unique form of rifling. A few of the English-made guns were purchased by the Union, with a much larger number entering Confederate service. They were extremely accurate and had a range of 2,800 yards at five degrees elevation and over fives miles at maximum range. The Confederates used a pair of them at Wilmington, North Carolina to keep Union blockade vessels at bay when blockade runners were making the final dash into port.
