Album Info:

Since the earliest days of cannon artillery, Saint Barbara has been the patron saint of artillerymen everywhere. Because of the great danger of explosion and sudden death with early cannon, the gunners sought the protection of the saint associated with thunderstorms, fire and explosions. Saint Barbara, the daughter of a powerful Roman aristocrat, was tortured and executed after her father had discovered that she had converted to Christianity. Legend has it that after her father executed her, he was struck down by lightning in divine retribution. Today the Order of Saint Barbara is a military honor society of artillerymen in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Saint Barbara day is December 4th and is traditionally celebrated by a military ball or dinner. The Order is awarded to artillerymen for a high degree of professional competence, selfless service, and contribution to the promotion of the Artillery branch.
