Album Info:

The AN/TPQ-48 Lightweight Counter-Mortar Radar (LCMR) is a target acquisition radar which has seen service in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is man portable weighing approximately 120 pounds and is transportable by a crew of two. It locates the point of origin (POO) of enemy mortars and can be used to direct a patrol to their location or to direct counter-fire from a unit's own mortars or field artillery. It provides a 6400 mil (360 degree) radius of continuous surveillance in order to detect the downward arch of enemy mortar rounds. The LCMR may be used in conjunction with other counter-battery radars such as the Q-36. In this role it may supplement the Q-36's 1600 mil (90 degrees) of coverage and provide a capability to acquire low trajectory fire from close-in enemy mortars. The LCMR may also serve independently with a unit that has no other indirect fire acquisition capability. In some cases LCMRs have been manned by field artillery radar crews (MOS 13R) and in other situations crews are drawn from various military occupational specialties (MOS). The LCMR can use battery power, power from a generator or vehicle or simply use 220 or 110 voltage line power. The LCMR also serves as a part of the Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar System (C-RAM).
