Ealing Studios are best known for their run of now classic comedies of the late 1940s and early 1950s. In fact their very 'Englishness', their quirks and idiosyncracies often lead to them being dismissed as twee and stereotyped, this is, however, missing the point. The company originated in the early sound era, and from 1938 under the stewardship of Michael Balcon produced many fine films which deserve to be better known.
