Album Info:
FEATURED POTD-NEWS Apr 3 2008. Most impressive New technology of The Electric Canvas Company. Seven of Adelaide’s cultural institutions on North Terrace have become more illuminating as their architectural facades are transformed with a kaleidoscope of projected images named ‘Northern Lights’ that can be seen in continuous sequence nightly for the duration of the Adelaide Festival of Arts. (It has been so popular that is has been extended for another two weeks). Ancient Greek statues and sketches suddenly appeared on the Art Gallery of South Australia's pillars, the Elder Conservatorium was covered in musical notes and vines, while Bonython Hall was lit up with medieval motifs. As each of the 70 projections created by The Electric Canvas changed, it was accompanied by "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd. Internationally acclaimed Sydney company The Electric Canvas uses technologically advanced projection techniques to completely change the way that buildings are seen. They have created stadium spectacles for sporting events such as the recent East Asian Games in Macau and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. For Northern Lights here in Adelaide South Australia, it uses giant, French-made PIGI system projectors, each weighing more than 200kg. The projectors are incredibly bright, running at 90,000 lumens - compared with fewer than 2000 lumens for an average home data projector. Each building has multiple colour and graphic treatments. The Electric Canvas company digitally photograph the buildings. "Then we can come back and make a template, so whatever we design will hit the building brick-for-brick'', said company senior artist Giles Westley For more fascinating information visit their website. Young and old alike have transformed North Terrace into a night time picnic area. It has drawn the community together, strangers are talking to each other and nearly everyone has a camera! This photo has not been enhanced it really was this good. This front entrance and arch way has to be my favourite.

I am so glad to see you have finally been able to upload a new album. This is simply supurb! I am so glad you dragged me to the city with you on so many hot nights over the past few weeks to take these photos. It was well worth it. It was good to get out of the house but so sorry I did need to keep resting on the benches. It is a fantastic light show and takes a few hours to see all 70 of the slides in the 7 buidlings. It was great how so many people (strangers) came to talk to us and ask about photography and how best to take the photos. Not many people realised they needed a tripod. I think we must have encouraged many hundreds of people to join webshots!! hugs Brian x

I read the description of how it is done - very interesting. I'm thinking that the distance of the projector from the bldg itself is crucial to get the images to line up properly. The designs were created with a very specific distance in mind.

It is brilliant! I very much enjoy reading your wonderful commentary on this fascinating colour and graphic display with the PiGi Projector, thank you!!! It is so beautiful and enhances the lovely architecture perfectly!! 90,000 lumens is extraordinary and the colours are so bright and vivid! I love the graphics and patterns as well. Congratulations on your wonderful feature in the News channel! I love this idea. It is the first I have seen of it.
