Album Info:

Introduced in the late 1950s to replace the AN/MPPQ-10 Radar, the "Q-4" is a mobile, intercept, non-tracking radar for locating the source of enemy artillery and mortar fire. Its secondary purpose is adjusting friendly low-velocity artillery fire. It is capable of locating targets out to 15,000 meters with accuracy to within 50 meters. When a projectile passes through the radar's dual beam, two separate echoes appear on the operator's scope. The operator then adjusts range and azimuth strobes over the echoes and the computer calculates the coordinates of the weapon that fired the projectile. The location of the enemy weapon is then sent to the Fire Direction Center (FDC) for targeting and destruction. The Control Indicator set can be operated from its trailer or remotely up to 50 feet away. The "Q-4" saw considerable use in the Vietnam War and remained in service until the early 1980s when it was replaced by the AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder Radar.
