Album Info:

This gun was designed as a landing force or amphibious assault gun for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. It has a screw breechblock and carries 32 rounds of ammunition in boxes on either side of the gun. The gun weighs 1,830 lbs. with ammunition and has a range of 4,500 yards. When the First Battalion of Marines was formed for the Spanish-American War in 1898, Company F was organized as a battery of four Mark I Guns. The battalion landed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on 10 June, 1898 and established the naval base there. During the Boxer Rebellion in China, Captain Ben Fuller's Marine Artillery Company fought with three of the guns in the capture of Tiensin on 24 June, 1900. When an Advanced Base Battalion was organized in August 1911, Company G was created and armed with the 3-inch Rapid Fire Gun. During the expedition to Vera Cruz, Mexico in 1914, and Artillery Battalion was organized with three companies armed with the guns. Several models of the Mark I continued to serve the Marine Corps throughout the "Banana Wars" in Latine America during the early 20th Century.
