In 1933 the new Army Chief of Staff, General Douglas MacArthur, ordered the motorization of half of the Army's light artillery. This gun is a World War I made French 75 gun and recoil system modified carriage to extend its service life. The A4 version featured a "high-speed" adapter of new wheel bearings and pneumatic tires for truck towing on roads. Outdated by the U.S. entry into World War II, they saw use as both artillery and anti-tank weapons in the first year of the war.
