Album Info:
This type of heavy bronze cannon was used primarily for laying siege to enemy fortifications. It fired a 24 pound solid iron ball to a range of 1,700 yards and was intended to destroy the walls of the enemy's fort. The guns other uses included as a fortress gun or naval gun. The cannon bears two ciphers (initials) on top. The crowned "M" is cipher of the Master General of the British Board of Ordnance, John Montagu, the 2nd Duke of Montagu who directed operations at the Royal Armory at Woolwich where the cannon was made. The larger cipher is the royal cipher of King George II (GR with 2 intertwined) for George Rex (Rex is Latin for King) on top. The breech ring at the rear of the cannon is marked A. SCHALCH FECIT 1748. This indicates it was cast under the supervision of Andrew Schalch, the first master founder of the Royal Gun Foundry at Woolwich and that was made (Fecit) in 1748. The rear of the gun above cascabel (knob) is marked 16-3-18 indicating its old English weight measurement in hundredweight which equals 1,894 lbs. The "U.S." stamp into the rear of the gun indicates it was captured by the Continental Army at some unknown point during the war.
