Album Info:

During World War I the U.S. realized the advantages of split trail carriage design over the box trail carriage then in use in all artillery pieces. The location of the box trail just behind the breech prevented the gun from being elevated for high-angle firing, an essential quality in the trench warfare of World War I. The first American gun with a split trail was the M1916 75mm Gun which was not used in the war. The split trail carriage of this T-1 prototype developed into the M1 carriage, which was used on the M2 Howitzer, the most widely used U.S. gun of World War II. As with most U.S. guns of the 1920s and 1930s, it has a M1897 75 mm barrel and recoil system.
