Album Info:
Nearly all American officers' uniforms were privately purchased by the officer and were tailored of fine grade wool. The "Sam Browne" belt was worn by the officers of the Allied armies as the universal officer insignia. In the U.S. Army the belt was a non-regulation item but General Pershing required its wear by all of his officers in Europe. The M1902 Garrison cap was only worn by officers in Europe. This uniform was worn by First Lieutenant John Whitehurst, 335th Artillery, 87th Division. M1918 Enlisted Man's Uniform 1918 (Right). The Model 1918 Coat was designed to save wool and has internal pockets instead of the external pockets of the early M1917 Coat. The M1917 Helmet is copied from the British Brodie helmet. The leg wrappings are called Puttees and were quickly adopted by American Soldiers because they were much more practical than the the U.S. leggings. This gas mask bag is slung over the shoulder rather than in the ready position on the upper chest. The M1912 Pistol Belt carries a holster for the M1911 .45 caliber pistol, magazine pouch, first aid pouch and canteen.
