Album Info:
Known as the French 75, this gun revolutionized artillery as the first rapid-fire field gun. The most exceptional feature was the French 75's long recoil system, which eliminated the need to re-position or re-lay the gun between rounds, the first such gun in history. Other features included fixed ammunition, an independent line of sight and a quick firing Nordenfelt breech, which gave an amazing maximum rate of fire of 24 rounds per minute. The French supplied over 1,800 guns to the U.S. Army while U.S. factories prepared to begin production. A number of guns along with French instructors came to Fort Sill to train U.S. artillerymen in the use of the guns.
