Position of Amsterdam: Fort Velzen was one of the just two forts in the position equipped with armoured turrets. The small numbers of turrets was caused by financial restrictions and changing strategic opinions. The fort has three so-called 'armoured carriages' for a 15 cm gun. These turrets had no recoil system, so the recoil was absorbed by the weight of the turrets and the glacis plates.
