The ditch of the forts around Amsterdam were normally defended by the infantry positioned on the remparts of the fort. However Fort Hoofddorp was constructed in a military dike, so it had rather high remparts. This made the normal ditch defense useless. Due to the rather small terrain available for the fort the designers choose to install an armoured caponier, armed with four MGs and three rifles. For more photos please visit www.fortweb.net
