Before the railway was built, travel from Québec to New England was difficult, long, uncomfortable and expensive, since carts had to be used. Travel was also limited by the weather because winters could be harsh. However, the situation changed progressively after 1840; and around 1860, several railway links were established between Québec and the U.S.
