Album Info:

What appears to be a greensward between monumnents is actually an original gravel carriage road, now covered with sod. Such "roads" were characteristic of what is called the "picturesque" landscape. As the visitors rode through the winding roads of the cemetery, they were presented with "prospects," or views of various parts of the landscape. I am indebted to Sarah Kerr, who told me of the original roads beneath the grass.
