Album Description:

This red poppy album is dedicated to Canadian soldiers (First Canadian Army) who helped liberate my home country, Holland, and to the troops in Afghanistan. I had written a longer description, but had to repeat below due to a Webshots limitation.

  • Gerry this is a very moving dedication. Sorry your dad had to suffer so terribly at such a young age. I know Clare's dad never wanted to talk about the war. Julie my youngest was the only one he ever told his story too, because she was doing a project in school about it. He was awarded the purple heart for bravery.

  • Gerry, this is such a beautiful and heartfelt dedication. And I , for one was so glad to come across this and read your caption. I am very ignorant in much of history of the world and am ashamed to admit that I never knew of this having occurred (Canada liberating Holland). Thanks so much for sharing!

  • Very touchy dedication. If I am right Holland presented their national flower tulips ( million of them )to Canada. When I was in Ottawa I saw how they beautifully decorated parks. But may be it was done because of different reason. Anyway, this small album is great. Thanks for sharing.

  • [...Webshots has cut off my original caption, so here it is repeated...] This red poppy album is dedicated firstly to those Canadian soldiers (First Canadian Army) who helped liberate my home country, Holland. My dad, who was 19 when Germany invaded Holland, had to hide for 5 years or face being sent to work in German factories that produced weapons against Holland. My mom told me that he frequently woke up at night, screaming, even till the time he died. His mental anquish must have been horrific, because he would never talk about it. Somehow, his suffering had a deep impact on me. Every year around Remembrance Day, I find my emotions hard to control. I think of dad, how he suffered in silence. I think of the Canadian soldiers who died in Holland, and I am thankful to God that many of those soldiers returned alive to Canada. Some scarred for life physically, but often emotionally. This album is also dedicated to our troops serving in Afghanistan. Let us not think that these men and women don't make a difference. They are bringing hope of a normal life to the people of that country. These soldiers, many of them fathers and mothers, leave their homes for a higher purpose. In 1944-45, the First Canadian Army was responsible for liberating much of Holland from German occupation. If you ask a child on the streets in Holland who liberated their country, they know it was the Canadians. I am proud to be a Canadian, and proud of our troops who make this possible! Two photos in different sizes with the Flanders Fields poem are available for download.

  • Gerry, I am very moved by your personal story and so glad that you have created an album in rememberance. Your dad did what he could, choosing not to be a part of that destruction. I pray for peace (and that goes for you and yours as well, Gerry). I am sure that anyone who has loved ones serving in Kandahar in a situation of such suppression, will appreciate your tribute. Joy, Malaysia
