  • Brief Synopsis: "To a certain extent, it was similar to his last speech at SAIS in 2007,when he articulated what America must do to regain it's legitimacy in the world. Clark noted that as this is now a Presidential Election year, our leaders and NS experts have a unique opportunity to engage the American people in open discussion about national security issues in a more broad, yet comprehensive and responsible manner (and a basis for his strong recommendation for all of us to read the book) by Jeffrey Bialos et al; "Ideas for America's Future - Core Elements of a New National Security Strategy" (including co-contributers: Stuart L. Koehl, David M. Catarious, and Suzanne E. Spaulding) clark stated that although he had strong disagreements with some of the authors positions in the book, it provoked strong and fresh ideas for the issues we face today. He believes that America's core values -- as instituted in our democracy -- is grounded on a free and open exchange of ideas in dialogue that sought resolutions in our differences. He argued these times are different in our perceptions of national security, unlike the 20-30 years ago, when utmost secrecy by our government on NS was an imperative due to the Cold War and the Soviets. (my synopsis). :) As always, Clark shared a lot of his FP and NS experiences dating back to his experience working with General Haig and the tense dialogue and NS issues at the time with the Soviets, and how everything from policies to our technologies were obsessively guarded and "top secret". He expressed his insights for NATO; favoring a more relevant important role by NATO now, perhaps even a new North Atlantic Treaty Agreement that focuses on building and strengthening US relationships and alliances. Clark's key expertise in NS and FP is evident throughout his speech. Notice in the mp3 recording how he masterfully shares these experiences, both in the military and government, to bring a clearer perspective and credibility toward to his key points that are relevant today."
