Album Description:
The Pacific Northwest's storm on December 1-3, 2007 was one of the worst storms ever. Port Orford, on the southern Oregon coast, was in the storms path with winds gusting to 113 mph and 40 foot waves smashing into the dock. Storm damage was severe.

Wicked storm. I'm a little late seeing the album but I've been 'off line' for a while.

What a disaster! Happy to know you're all safe and didn't suffer too much damage, but you were really crazy to go about photographing in these conditions! Still, if you hadn't we wouldn't have been able to appreciate this sensational reportage...

Randy - you got some terrific shots of the devastation. You should be a photo-journalist. What a shame to see the damage and the effects on wildlife. Probably the storm of the century and will not happen again for some time - hopefully. - DeeAnne

My God....what terrible photos did you take!!!! It's a great album anyway, but I don't like this kind of images! We must think better and preserve our environment, otherweise the nature rebels against the humanity! Lorella

Well, what a way to end the year with a hurricane in Washington! Great that you are ok and I hope you didn't get any flooding! I saw the pictures of all the damage from the water! I wonder what all those people are going to do afterwards!

That storm was just nasty. Here in WA we got less wind and more rain. The flooding was so bad in areas it wiped out entire communities. Hope you faired well. I'm praying for a mild Winter. Thanks for sharing :-)

A great album of photo journalism and congratulations for having your photos most prominent on the front page. You were hit with stronger winds than we got, but we had the worst floods I have ever seen with with loss of homes, animals and peace of mind. I stayed warm and dry in my house with no thought to venture out and see the damage, but watched the news in the days that followed and could hardly believe the damage. Let's hope this is only a hundred year storm and not a sign of more to come. Will your homeowners insurance cover the repair of your fence? Best wishes to you and Judy and your four legged babies. ~Marjie

Great documentation of a terrible storm. 40 foot waves and 113 mph winds and our intrepid photographer Randy is out there tied to his truck taking pictures. You're a trooper, buddy! Vicky

The power of wind and water is truly incredible, and frightening as well. This album illustrates the puny strength of all living things - and their creations - against such implacable opponents. From birds to buildings, we witness the falling and devastation. Your album has recorded it all unflinchingly. ~ Brenda

This was awful for all of us in the Northwest, we are in terrible shape up here in Washington, the loss of livestock and animals is heartbreaking. Not to mention all the homes lost in Pacific, Lewis and Grays Harbor County. Luckily you guys did not get hit as hard as this, but it is amazing isn't it? Something we do not usually see to this extent. We were flooded in so I was unable to get any shots of the storm. Thanks for sharing.

We got whacked here in Hawai'i right at the same time you guys did. I hate to tell you this, but there is more bad weather headed your way... Batten down the hatches. We had forty to seventy (plus) mile per hour sustained winds for days on end throughout the first week of December. It is just now starting to dry out. Nice photojournalism here... I tried to get out and photograph some of it much as you did but I couldn't keep my lens dry. Salt water is so corrosive that I finally gave up. Clark from O'ahu

What a storm Randy! So much destruction. I feel so bad about the poor pelicans. They really took a beating. I can't believe some people parked their cars right next to the large waves when huge rocks were being catapulteded over. Amazing!! Glad you came through without much damage. Take care, Paula

It was surprising to hear how much worse PacNW got hit than we did up here. I think I was most upset to hear about the pelicans than anything in your last letter. Seeing the photos now made it worse. I'm very relieved that you and Judy survibed well. Thanks for the album to let us know! Leslie

I only lived through one storm like this when I lived in Brookings. I do not think I would like to live through it again, especially when the wind howls thru the trees and that surf. You really do not know the force of Mother Nature until you can actually be out in the storm and taking amazing pictures like you have for us. I am so happy to hear that you and your family are safe. If there is anything I can do for you Randy, just send me a message and I will try and help in anyway that I can.

Quite the storm. Thanks for your email updates. I watched the coverage on the evening news. Amazing. Your album contains some great shots of the storm's fury, power and destruction, especially the burst shots of the surf hitting the rocks. Thankfully yous made it thru unharmed. Rick/Arizona

Oh my God, Thank God you left the area when you did!!! I cried when I saw the birds. Thank God Judy & you were safe!!!! Your pictures are fantastic, but so sad, so very sad. I am so glad you left when you did!!!!! I couldn't stay there either. It is heart breaking. You must have your lap top with you. You said the sound was loud, I can see why. When you get home they will have much of the horror cleaned up. I hope your enjoying you time with the Family. Did you received a box before you left? My Prayers, and Love are with Judy & You. Susan

Hi Randy & Judy, I am so glad to hear that you are both well and your four legged children of the fur kind are OK too, also that you suffered little damage in this shocking storm .... Randy, I do hope this experience doesn't turn you into a storm chaser .... LOL .... Seriously these graphic shots show just how devastating storms like these can be, also they show just how much power the sea has when whipped up into such a furry, with waves so huge that they dwarf the trucks and moved the shipping containers left abandoned on the wharf. Plus, the very sad storm damage to the wildlife, the trees and property ... My parents taught me to have a very healthy respect for the Sea, when I was a child. I can remember them taking us for a drive along the Great Ocean Road here in Victoria, when the seas were huge, so much so, that my father took a photo of the waves breaking over the cliffs and merging together at the entrance of the little bay into Thunder Cave ... the cliffs would be about 100 feet high ... we were well back from the edge of those cliffs, but still got wet from the spray ..... Again I am glad that you and your family are safe, thanks for sharing these AWESOME!! shots, Take care my friends, Hugs to both of you, Trish.

Hey Randy, firstly let me say I am glad you're all o.k. These are very gripping and sad pictures. We've been talking to our in-laws in Albany every day, and inland it seems the worst of it was the Rainfall, but Albany was not flooded. Luckily they moved from Vernonia in the Coast Range last year. They lost their pharmacy there in the 500 year flood in 1996. I flew in from Germany after the roads were passable and helped clean up it was horrible. Now I see on the webcams that Vernonia is even much more under water than it was then and totally cut off from the rest of the world. I saw pictures of Tillamook, totally under water again (still remember the dead drowned holstein cows from last time) and Chehalis Washington looks really bad too! This is now the 2nd such catastrophy in 10 years (a 500 year flood) Global warming is most certainly a player in these horrible events. God Bless. Marita

You'll be getting calls from news agencies wanting to hire you. Very brave of you to go out and weather the storm to get these fine captures. My cousin said that several folks lost their roofs. Thank you for sharing your meticulous coverage of this devastating event.

Wow Randy, you certainly captured the strength of this storm and the damage it did around your area. I'm not so sure I'd have been as brave as you to drive around with the winds so strong. The wave sequence shots were very telling of the the power this storm was packing. Cheers, Sandra.

Randy, thanks for sharing these very poignant pictures. It is very sad to see the death of beautiful creatures and the fallen trees. People can always rebuild, but what a destructive storm this was and as you said this is one that people will be talking about for years to come. I am so glad that you and Judy and your pups remained unscathed. Marion

Randy, this is such a sorrowful event!!! It is sad to see the destruction of these Pacific Northwest storms. People just do not and will not be able to understand the power of such a storm... This is very reminiscent of the nasty Nor'easters that hit the New England coast. I am glad to see that you did not have to take pictures of damage to your home!!!

I've been waiting for these photos Randy, I even checked in last night and was looking. This is terrible. I complain about our cold, harsh winters here in Manitoba, but we are not subject to this kind of thing. What can be a beautiful scene one day can turn into sheer destruction the next. I too hope you never have to experience this again in your lifetime, and I'm happy you came out of it safely with whatever damage it did cause to your home and property. You and your family are most important. Hugs ~Vickie~
