Man, all of you did alot more time there then I did. I was a short timer and I remember how good it felt to be released(they could of kept the suit). A couple of thing that all of these pictures can not capture. Is the sound of the cell doors opening and closing every day. And the ice cold water to shave with. But I guess we all have are own list of things that the pictures can not show. The Castle was a better place to stay at then the stockade was, "Big Red". I was there for 4 months. The 7th day there I received a dear john letter. So they put me into solidarity confinement in j block until they flew me to Leavenworth. They said the letter made me a risk. What a crock...

I am really happy to learn from a reliable sorce that, my paintins, were moved to the new DB all but one the Indian on the steel door's. that one was how it all started, the commandant said i could spend the rest of what i had on my twenty year sentance painting in the screen print shop if i would leave all of them behind when i got out. 8 hours a day five days a week. the painting of the Kastle took me over four monthe to paint. I would put myself in to the painting so deep that I would escape into them litterally, my own personal escape. thousands of guys went through this place, and all had to cope in there own why. I was one of the lucky few that did turn it around, self rehab. twelve to fifteen year's it took. sure there were alot of bad stuff that happend in and out, but its the good things that make it sad to see her finally tourn down, she was a big part of my life for so many years, and learned so much and gained so much, and yes lost so so much in the prossess. life is not fare, the damage i did, that is on me. what i gave back is also on me. one fellow there told me once and i will never forget his word's that made the biggest change in my life was ( If your not part of the cure, then your part of the problem. ) so true and still live by that 40's latter. thanks for the kind word 3wingmike. i do understand, as all that passed through the rotunda has. we all have felt. thanks dave for the pic's and the memory's. she had a life of her own. the DB lives on..... and this will pass too.

41909, If you still consider yourself and everyone that has gotten out as convicts then you have some major issues you need to deal with. Did you not get any help from mental health?

okay 41909 you may have the number but you don't have the time...dam short timer...in my time if you didn't have a dime you didn't matter to anyone...on the other hand GOOD for you getting a second chance and making good of it. When I was there only the snitch's ( like Ed Chisholm) and short timers got the chance to go back.

3 Wing! I bought the book and read it thinking I would be relieved. I hate that place so much it took too much of my youth. So why was I not relieved, but saddened to see the demolition pics? The dark evil feeling of the wings with those orange lights and the constant tension. Thank you Mr. Wheat for all of your paintings. I have wanted the castle one for years, you are not the only one looking for your work. I thank you for hiding all the people in your paintings and giving us a way to clear our minds and escape if only for a moment. Contact the Author of The Saga.

I have seniority over all of you convicts. My DB Number was 41909, goes back to April 1966. Back in those days you didn't have to receive a discharge to go to the DB. I got 9 months and busted to E1 with a fine. I went back to duty in September 66 and made a career out of it. I made rank in record time out of the DB. I retired a SFC E7 and would have made E8 if I stayed another year. The irony of this situation is the fact I now live 32 miles from Ft Leavenworth and do all of my PX and Commissary shopping there. I was also witness to the tear down. A friend of mind wrote a book about the DB. It's called "The Saga of Ft Leavenworth Castle" by Donald Olsen. He did a walk through when they were tearing it down and told me he grabbed a bunch of bricks marked with "USMP" for U.S. Military Prison. These bricks were made on site while they were building the DB. If you are interested in one of these bricks (I don't know how many he has), drop me a line and I'll see what I can do. The new joint looks like a typical modular prison and it holds less than 800 prisoners I believe. Do a Google map search on Ft Leavenworth and you will see it. We need to set up our own Alma Mata site just for ex prisoners. I went there from Germany. There were 35 of us that came over by ship. We stayed in the Ft Dix stockade for two weeks until they got air transportation for us to Leavenworth. Purdue University loaned us their plane for the job. Among us there were murders who had 40 years and 35 years. It was a trip. I landed a job as the Mess Clerk. I spent many hours in the craft shop making and racing model race cars. Two weeks before my release back to active duty I was sent across the street to the roof of the MP barracks for training. There were about 20 of us there. We were unsupervised after duty hours and had post privileges and could use the PX. Send me an email to: rich@richgreene.com with USDB in the subject line so we can talk further.

#77131 I can say that I may be one of the ONLY of 2 inmates to actually have been there while the ball was swinging. I was there emptying out the vocational building while 7 wing and 8 were getting the ball. The building was actually pretty tough in it's death throws. The plywood pictures were taken down, but the doors to the print shop with the indian artwork were still there the last I saw. I always wondered who drew them. Sure would like to get the cd with all the pictures. I was also the 6th inmate to enter the 'new' usdb. Already a while ago.

Ervin, I probably know you too. I'm 73168 and was at the chapel alot there. 20 years ago, I'd have been overjoyed to see my home for 5 years come crashing down (3W,4W, 4B (LOL) & 6 wing). However, after reviewing most of the pics with a higher level of maturity, I've have a feeling of sadness........ Sad that we cannot pass on the tradition of the indoctrination meeting in 3 wing, the 4 TV's for like 500 guys per wing. Captain llllamb, and the dungeon to the next generation of thugs. We are missing out on passing one of the US Military's finest traditions for all Uncle Sams Misguided Children, LOL.

I was also surprised to learn about this being torn down. I was 19 years old when I came here 1969. Inmate 50779, I worked in the chapel and was also baptized here. Got my 1 way ticket home 2 months before my 21st birthday in Nov. of 1971.

WOW, I can't believe they tore it down. I visited shortly after it was gone. I was a staff member there from 1997 to 2004 in Bravo Company. I als0 worked in the laundry plant at the old and the new facility. Great memories there and I made some life long friends.
