Apparently this website is not going to keep going. stevenswife - I wish you well and I hope the 14 months passes quickly. The kids will keep you busy. Kurt is still at Ft. Drum in training for scouts. He is absolutely loving and excelling at it. Receiving huge amounts of PT, will receive SWAT, EMT and Sniper training that I know of so far. Said last week they're to deploy in 9 months, but at this point it could be anywhere. God bless. Claire

i got our ceremony video on friday and it came just in time for steven to watch it with the kids before he left. he deployed yesterday. it was a very emotional day for all of us.....when he is done with his 2 month combat training at ft. bragg he will have a 4 day pass....i cant wait!!!!!!!!!!the next 14 months are going to be very hard but all i can do is take it 1 day at a time

So glad you have support to keep in contact with you. What an adventure for these guys. You will get through. Keep a journal and lots of pictures of the kids for Steven, he will love it. I didn't realize it was 4 to 6 weeks for the DVD, my husband ordered it, so thanks for the info. I also didn't even know about the training one. Kurt has seen more of the guys from Basic around Ft. Drum, don't know if he has seen Steven. Claire

no we haven't rec'd ours yet either...we bought the training dvd but we can't find steven on it....they said 3-6 weeks for the ceremonies video and as of monday it will be a month already since they graduated if you can believe it....our guys may be up for promoitions soon...steven was told that if you didn't do the advanced prom. during basic you became a pv2 after about 6 months after enlisting which for him is the 27th the same day he is activatedand he should be upgraded to a pfc if not a spc by the time his deployment is done...i spent almost an hour on the phone today with the head of our family readiness group..she called to see how i was doing and if we needed anything...i think we are becoming fast friends....this is her 3rd deployment and knows exactly how i feel since she goes thru these same feeling every time...steven is at ft drum now on drill and is coming home tomorrow and will have to leave in 2 weeks...its going to be hard more for the kids than me but all i can do is take it one day at a time

stevenswife, so sorry to hear you'll be alone for 14 months, you will make it. That's what God, family and friends are for, to lean on and let them help carry you. I thought we were supposed to keep this website going. Kurt and David Mast got the news today that they both passed the Scout qualifications. Said the training is much more difficult than anything they had done in basic. The other day ran 8 miles in less than an hour. Ruck sacks are up to 50 lbs. But he really likes it. Has anyone received their CD of graduation ceremony? We have still not received ours. Drill Sergeant McGinnis, I can not tell you how greatly respected you are by my son. Thank you to all of you, you are appreciated.

i know how you feel...steven has drill this weekend at ft drum...then his unit is federally activated on the 27th we have the sendoff ceremony at 10 am on the 29th then these guys are feaded back to ft drum then off to ft bragg for 2 months of combat training and then off to afganistan for a year...i'm not looking to his deployment later this month AFTER THE 29TH I WON'T SEE MY HUSBAND AND FATHER OF MY CHILDREN FOR 14 MONTHS.

My son, Mackiewicz left last Weds. for Ft. Drum. When he reported to his unit, he and some others were offered to go into Scout training. His battle buddy, Mast, was also offered it. They will be at Ft. Drum until next August. As of right now, then Afghanistan. But as we are learning, that could change many times before then. The goodbye at the airport was very difficult for me though. God bless to all.

Stevenswife. I am not sure what pics I have that you would be interested in, however you are welcome to what I have. If you would provide me an email address, I would be happy to send you what I have. My youngest son was in charge of the camera and I have the video cam. I know that he took a boat load of pics, and hopefully so are what you might be interested in. It was a pleasure to meet to and some of the other folks we all came to know here on this site. I hope that you and your men are enjoying some time together. My son Will, #116 is leaving for Fort Myer this Thursday. He is stationed there to be part of The Old Guard. The Old Guard is the Honor Guard division that provides military police for Washington DC, Presidential security at the Whitehouse and surrounding areas, and performs ceremonial duties at Arlington Cemetery. Will was also recruited by a West Point officer and is looking into attending that elite academy. It is really awesome to see all the wonderful opportunities that the ARMY has for our young men. As for the videos, I am still working on those, however once I get them finished, anyone is welcome to them.

sorry scottsmom out last name is Olmstead....alans mom we are so very sorry to hear about alan....how is he doing? better i hope. steven remembers alan he said they has to wrestle each other during combatives.....may we ask why alan was in the hospital...steven was wondering if it was heat related...which i can believe after see ing all the ambulances going in and out during our time down there but steven was given his final basic pt test on the 7th. funny thing was he had a pt test this morning and he did better than he did in basic..he got 43 on pushups 53 situps and 14:49 on his run his LT thinks he may get to go to ranger school at some point.......we got the final word today. steven is not shipping out with his unit because the final orders came in while he was still at Ft Benning. the lt also said that he will ship out eventually but he has several different options available to him...he wanted to go but the decison wasn't his. every one at the armory is great i met the co leader of our family readiness group and offered to volunteer for it. there is actually a kid in his unit that i went to school with and one that steven went to school with so it actually feels like a close family

Well i know last wk when alan was in the hospital all he talked about was steve and how he hoped he got his push ups or something he needed to graduate. he said your hubby was a great guy . he also spoke very highly of scottsmom's son . but i can say honest he was worried about steven . i know a few stayed back with alan but he will be home soon after he is off the 10 medical. so he can retry his pushups. Proudmom, I must admit it was more to me than I expected. I have never felt more pride in my entire life. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Hotel, it was about 12 minutes from Ft Benning, beautiful place and the food was amazing, I paid 159 per night and it was well worth it. Thank you for all the good advice you gave us, it was nice going there and knowing what to expect. I took 120 pictures, I most likely have a pic of everyone's son, hubby, dad etc I will post them as soon as I can figure out my daughters digital camera. I developed 50 pics printed them as 8x10's made my son a poster board of some of the pics, first thing he said when he came home..."why would you advertise the worst 14 wks of my life" lololololol....I love my pictures. I told him to look at it when he is having a bad day. lololo...Hope everyone got home safe and had the same wonderful time that I did...I get to do it again next year with my middle child...

I can't say this enough...A big thanks goes out to all your infantrymen for the sacrifices they've made to become our Guardians of Freedom. ****I'd love to hear more about your time and experience at Turning Blue/Graduation. Was it everything you thought it would be...more or less? How was your lodging? If you could change anything...what would it be? Did my advice ring true...what other advice would you recommend? I look forward to seeing photos that you'll hopefully post (hint, hint). **** Remember to stay in touch, because it's NOW more than ever that you'll relish the support and friendships you've gained through this website. Who here had a wonderful weekend? What an amazing experience the Turning Blue ceremony was. I thought there was no way that could be out-done, however I was wrong. The graduation ceremony was a once in a life time experience and was worth every sweating second. Our guys looked awesome. It was a real pleasure to meet some of you at the ceremonies. Nice to put a face and voice to text to: Scottsmom, Zacsmom, Stevenswife and others. I hope and pray for you, your families, and your soldiers as they enter into the next exciting phase of their ARMY journey. For those of you that might be interested in some video of the ceremonies, I was able to get the family briefing, the Turning Blue and the Graduation Ceremony on film. I am in the process of editing that footage and would make it available to whoever would like a copy of it. I must admit, the majority of the Blue and Graduation ceremony is of Will, however I did try to get some close-ups of as many of the other men in ECHO as I could. I was able to get all of the family briefing and the sound quality came out a lot better that I anticipated for all ceremonies. While it is not “Professional” you can’t beat the price!!! If you are interested, let me know and we can make arrangements to email the content. Once aging, many congratulations and abundant thanks go out to our special men in ECHO company. You are an inspiration to the nation and you make us so PROUD! Hooah ECHO!!!

Ceremonies and time with the soldiers was absolutely wonderful (and extremely hot). Met some wonderful men and families. We hung with some extras all day Saturday that did not have anyone there for them. People not there, sorry it is extremely chaotic on the field to get to others, especially if in another platoon. Josh Frey's mom - I did not get to meet Josh, but my son pointed him out in a picture with his platoon. Please e-mail me at cbluemajesty@msn.com, we would love to send them to you and my son can tell us if he's in any others. We took a lot of pictures and probably have most of the people in them, not just 3rd platoon. Please reference the e-mail to photos of Army or something, because otherwise I delete them if I don't know who it is. Witnessed hundreds of soldiers shipping out of Atlanta airport on their way to Iraq. I feel awful that I won't be able to be in New York when my son leaves for there on Sept. 24th with many of these soldiers. Constant prayers and blessings to all. Claire Doyle

Steven is one of the ones that will have the pt holdover i believe. i just don't want him to give up on this and get discharged for refusing to stay. i have to talk him into staying if he gets that mind set...........i want him home just as much as he wants to be home but this has been his dream for soooooooooooo long that i hate to see him give up on it...maybe we should all gang up on him thurs. and talk to him....lollollol well i'm off to my new job for orientation...i go to my inlaws tomorrow night after work and then we are heading out before daybreak on wed. yeah!!!!!!!!!!!! Phone call in Michigan! Yeah! Oh if anyone is staying at Days Inn on victory lane, you might want to rethink. I just read 4 pages of reviews and spoke to my husband as well, it is the WORST place you can think of. Its all about prostitutes and drugs and roaches and broken furniture and mold. Today before pass, their D.S. warned them that if anyone was going there-take a friend. You don't want to be there alone! You know its bad if your DS warns a soldier to take another soldier for protection BY the way -nobody went don't worry.

Got a call in Kansas!! YEA!! We had a bad connection also but I could definitely hear "I passed". :o) I couldn't make out some of the other conversation but it sounded for the most part along the lines of what Josh said. All are on pass til 4 p.m. today & the calls should be coming in. I'm so PROUD of all our guys!!! I pray for safe travel to each & every family. See you all soon!!

Ok everyone, I just got another call from Josh- 8:ooam pacific time. The guys have passes today so hopefully you'll get your calls today. I asked for more details and he said it was the whole company that passed except that one in Texas,BUT then he followed that up by saying there might be a few PT holdovers. That means they may not have passed the final PT, they WILL graduate this Fri, but will be held over to restart from Day 1 and stay til they pass the PT. Then he said there may be a few BUT he's not for sure, that a few might not have recieved their crossfire pins after FTX and they will not be graduating, but he didn't know names or anything. I'm sure if that were the case with yours you would have already recieved a call, especially if they know you're coming for graduation, they wouldn't want you to make the trip for nothing. Anyways, I asked him to spread the word to the guys that they have family eagerly waiting for calls from them. I sure hope you get your calls today. Like I said, if you haven't already heard otherwise by now, plan on congratulating your soldier on Friday. Hooah Echo soldiers and families!

My husband brought me the phone in the shower about an hour ago. It was a horrible connection; but a very happy call. They (at least the people in the 4th platoon) are on a pass today until 4:00, so hopefully more calls will be rolling in today. Safe travels to all!

Steven's wife, I am sorry that I do not know if Josh meant the whole Co or just his platoon. I was sure you'd all be getting your calls too, so I didn't think to ask for more details. I asked if everyone passed and he answered all but one, and then told me what happened with that one. Believe me, I know what you all are feeling. When my oldest graduated from Basic with the Marines, I hadn't heard from him in 2 weeks, didn't know if he was graduating or not, but off I went to San Diego for the big day and there he was. I'm sure it'll work that way for all of you too, but keeping my fingers crossed for all of you to get your calls SOON! I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help to ease your stress levels! HANG IN THERE GUYS!!!

Hang in there everyone, your calls will come. They were doing inventory, cleaning, going on a run, donating blood, etc., etc. and there was a line for the phones. No passes today, but I'm sure they'll call as soon as they can. No lights out til 1:00a.m last night, then up at 5:00 this morning, so there'll be some tired boys.

WAY TO GO ECHO COMPANY SOLDIERS!!!...I didn't have any doubts... Well, as you can see, my husband broke down and brought our laptop with us on our vacation. We're having a great time but disappointed that our son/soldier was not able to fly in to be with us because the unit he's in is on an 8 hour standby for emergencies...breaks my heart that we can't see him but am very hopeful we'll have another opportunity sometime soon. ****RECOVERY WEEK...very tough week. They are in close quarters with everyone else continually cleaning and inventorying everything in sight from sun up to sun down. They will experience irritability with one another, but spirits should still remain high since they can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. Won't be long now...T-Minus 4 days till Turning Blue!!!!! *** There was a question a couple days back about being able to bring a backpack to Turning Blue for holding items like water, binoculars, etc. Yep..I did both days!!!! :-) Signing off for now from the sunny and HOT state of Arizona, Lisa...VERY PROUD mom of an American Soldier

Hi Claire. I believe the answer to your questions is yes, you are allowed to bring these items to the ceremony. It is my understanding that at the entrance to the base, there is a rather thorough inspection of the vehicle and passengers entering the base. That is the security checkpoint, and all points after that are relatively open. I am told to plan accordingly for this inspection, as it is similar to that of an airport check in, meaning it is not a simple flash and pass process. Also, make sure all parties have a valid and current PHOTO ID at this point. Looking forward to meeting you. Bring some brownies for us civilians too would ya? LOL!!!
said
nedblome 2007.08.01 at 08:51:28 PDT
Sorry Lisa's already gone. Does anyone know if we are able to take backpacks into the ceremonies? Want to take water, camera, binoculars, etc. I sent brownies out the other day as congratulations for all completing FXT and PT. My son said about 50, so it might just be his platoon, he's #312. Yes, I also sent a separate bag for drill sergeants. I also sent a letter of congrats to all soldiers and DS's. Hopefully they will pass it around for all to read or have someone read it out loud. We are leaving in 2 days, on the 3rd to visit my mom first before Georgia. Best wishes to all and see you there. Congratulations on your new job stevenswife, I'm believing and praying you got it. Does anybody have a clue when we are to expect a call from our men today? As for being OVER, I understand that the majority of the physical stuff is over, but not totally. I am told there will still be PT, some smokings if somebody srews up, and general last minute "trainings" b y the DS to get our guys ready to graduate, so like the saying goes....It ain't over till the fat lady sings. If you listen closely, you might hear her warming up! It is also my understanding that they will be cleaning anything and everything in sight there.

But we will only have one car so i dont know how we will be able to do it. If anyone has suggestions or wants to help you can email me at stiles_babymom@hotmail.co m I know im not a mom but i still want to help these boys are going to be like family to my brother.

Josh's mom - so sorry that you will not be able to make it, we also will keep an eye out, and thst goes for anyone else also. Anyone is more than welcome to tag along with us. We did that with others at another son's graduation from Navy. Stevenswife - I've heard that they will even do PT tests up to 1 hour before graduation. I am believing that Steven, and all, have already passed it. I actually started doing push-ups and crunches a few weeks ago myself. I thought, by golly if all these guys have to do it, I can at least do some too. They have all been working extremely hard. A couple years ago, my son brought up a dress I wore to a "tea party" at school they had when he was in kindergarten. He loved that dress. It is out of style, but I think I'm going to wear that dress for ceremonies on Thursday and surprise him. Afterwards I will cut it up and save some pieces. Give him one to keep with him to know that mom is always thinking and praying for him wherever he is. And maybe a top and scarf that I can wear every time we greet him when he comes home. I was so touched when he mentioned that dress so many years later, so I know it meant a lot to him. We now call it "my tea party dress". Blessings, Claire Doyle

Thank you so much all of you for your kind thoughts and support of all our Eco soldiers. I am one of those unfortunate ones who will be unable to attend the graduation and that breaks my heart. Knowing that some of you will be looking after those soldiers without any family there for them is a great consolation to me. My son is Josh Frey, #218. If someone spots him it would be such a great honor for one of you to pin his cord for him. Does anyone know if the soldiers without family there have to get their own flights home, or does the Army take care of that? And any idea of how soon he'll be home after grad? Josh hasn't been told anything yet and its a bit worrisome. Thank you in advance to anyone who finds and "adopts" my son, it is so greatly appreciated. Good luck to all of you and have a fantastic time!

Yes, I would bring a set of civilian clothing for your son to wear...he'll appreciate it more than you know. Please don't get me wrong, our soldiers wear their uniforms with pride...but it's like a job to them, when it's over they want to relax when it's 'their' time off. When in uniform they have strict guidelines they have to follow (Yes, mam...No, sir, etc.). They like to blend in when they can. Great question... ***As for the question about pictures...yes, they will get them before they actually graduate, but your husband may be like my son who presented the pictures to me as a present along with t-shirts/hoodies their platoon designed, along with the boot camp DVD. And what a wonderful present they were!!!! More kleenex as you can imagine... Thinking of the DVDs, if you end up getting one of Boot Camp and of Graduation here's a hint on what you can do with them. When Brandon visited home for the first time after Airborne graduation, we threw him a Congratulation/Welcome Home Soldier party with friends and family. We put the DVDs in and I'll tell you what a HIT that was...especially with Brandon commentating about "oh, here's where we jumped the enemy forces..." etc. Everyone was rivited and gave a stand ovation at the end. BEST WISHES EVERYONE!!! Lisa

For graduation - Hallmark stores have military cards. They have one for graduation. Our stores do not keep them out, you have to ask a clerk to get them for you. There's probably about 20 to choose from. I've sent some already and some are for later, courage, service, missing you, etc. My son's new orders are also Ft. Drum #312. Thanks for the airfare info. We will check it out, I've already purchased his ticket. Question - so even if they're leaving with us the following day, should we still bring them civilian clothes? Thanks. Claire Doyle

I think that's about it, you all are pretty much IN THE KNOW to get you started. Oh, one more important thing to bring...bring another duffle bag or back pack for your soldier, they are DEFINITELY going to need it since they'll have so much stuff (believe it or not). PHEW, almost forgot that one..that was close. LOL ****Well this week marks a VERY important week in the lives of your soldiers...how exciting. Their trek through the wilderness evading enemy forces and setting up rescue missions is almost over...Honor Hill awaits your brave, strong men. ****Everyone have their check lists out? Camera (most important), binoculars, umbrella (just in case), plastic (that would be credit cards for all your souveniers), map... And for your soldier...civilian clothing, candy, homemade cookies, duffle bag... CONGRATULATIONS to YOU and YOUR SOLDIERS, you've made it through boot camp. The loved one who left your house 14 weeks ago has changed in so many ways, but is also the same... May each of these soldiers have a prosperous and safe military career. Much love to you all from a VERY PROUD mom of an AMERICAN SOLDIER...Lisa

I've been asked several times with past companies about graduation gifts...do you get anything? And if so, what is the 'norm'? I don't think it's a MUST to get a gift...just you being there is THE most important thing. However, here are some suggestions from what others have gotten: cell phone, digital camera, laptop, medallion that can be worn with their dog tags (just to name a few). Or get them a certificate to RANGER JOES, which is very valuable since this is where they go to get their uniforms pressed, patches sewn on...and everything in between...I LOVED this store! It's not too far from Sand Hill, located in Columbus. But once again, it's YOU that is the best gift, so don't feel pressured. I only bring this up because it's often brought up and I didn't want to leave this base uncovered.

***For those staying at Uchee Creek Campground...be aware that it's in the middle of two time zones (yep...). Your cell phone will have a hay-day changing back and forth. So if you have a watch make sure you put it to Eastern Standard Time so you are on the right time for planning to leave to Turning Blue, and getting your soldier back to barracks on time on Thursday (8pm), and to Graduation. ALSO, there is VERY LITTLE cell phone coverage at Uchee Creek. I couldn't get a signal at all and I have Verizon. I'm told that T-Mobile may get a little reception, but not much. There will be phones in the cabins...but don't rely on your cell phones until you leave the campground. Any other place on Fort Benning we had no other reception problems.

Lisa - You are a true GEM!!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your valuable information. It means so much to be able to go these ceremonies knowing what to expect & thank you for the wonderful tips. I too will keep my eyes open for others with no family in attendance. It breaks my heart to think some may not have a loved one there for them so I, & it sounds like several others, will be sure to take care of them. :o) I've cried for the last several minutes while reading everyone's messages. I sooooooo can't wait to see my son!!!!!!! My prayers are with each & every Echo soldier. I pray God will give each the strengh & endurance (both mentally & physically) & that each will rise to the occasion & pass all requirements for graduation. Steveswife - I'll say a special one for Steve & your entire family. Know I'm behind you & your soldier also. :o) Claire & Sndee - I'm a cryer too. Nice to know I'm not alone. lol Nedblome - I hope to have the chance to meet you & your family on grad day. :o) Lisa - thank you again so much!!!! Have a safe & memorable family-filled trip!! mommackiewicz- At Turning Blue everyone is allowed onto the field to greet and congradulate their soldier. Keep in mind, your soldier will have to remain in formation 'at attention' until you actually approach him...then he can be 'at ease'. I remember my son Brandon tracking our movements with his eyes until we got to him...then POW...HUGE hug coming his way with LOTS of tears flowing. DON'T FORGET TO BRING LOTS OF KLEENEX...you'll need it! When you see your soldier march onto Kanell Field for the first time with his head held high, his chest puffed out and pride pouring out of him, I have to tell you...your emotions will be going through the roof. I liken the experience to the moment when the doctor first hands you your baby...such intense love (so hard to put into words). And remember...Don't forget the other soldiers standing out on that field with no family and friends...Thank you for being such a great supportive ARMY FAMILY. Your soldier will definitely benefit from it...they have a long and hard road ahead of them and the love and support they receive will go a long way. HOOAH! Lisa

VALUABLE FUTURE INFORMATION!!!!! I want to share some valuable information that will come in handy in the near future: If you are trying to get the best airfare for your soldier to come home on GO TO THIS WEBSITE: www.bluestarmoms.org/airf are.html This website will give you all the ins and outs of getting reasonable airfare prices for your soldier...and believe me, you'll NEED this! NEVER FORGET...You can accompany your soldier inside the airport, to the actual boarding gates...when he gets his tickets and shows his military ID, all you need to do is show your license and they will give you a visitor's pass to go through security (anybody UNDER 18 needs to check in as well so they get a pass, but no ID required). I seen a lot of families in the airport saying their tearful farewells at the security area because they didn't know...I've spread the news to everyone I could... It'll give you that much more time with your loved one before they depart. And we all know that those few moments are so precious and valuable :) I'm amazed not more military families know this...PLEASE spread the word. Lisa

Onto some POINTS OF INTEREST at Fort Benning--- For all you history buffs (or not) you really should check out the National Infantry Museum at Bradley Hall, it's right on the main base with free admission, but VERY interesting!! We had a great time seeing the evolution of the military weapons, uniforms, Hilter's bust, and SO MUCH MORE! I have a few pictures on my Graduation album from the inside of this museum if you want to check it out. For those of you who have soldiers going into Airborne... go check out the Jump Towers at the Airborne barracks and see some of the obstacle course training that they will be doing... you may be lucky and see other soldiers jumping while you're there (we got fortunate and witnessed soldiers doing just that! WOW...that's what your soldiers will be doing...!!!) Looking for a great coffee place on base, go check out a place called Meditations, it's not too far from Burger King/Taco Bell; they have wonderful deli sandwiches and terrific lattes and reasonable prices...mmm, YUM!

Lisa, thank you so much for all of the advice, especially about keeping our eyes open for others. Another thought, at another son's graduation for Navy, a mother in attendance did not have a camera. I took pictures for them, got her address and sent them to her. Question - is only one family member allowed on the field to attach their cord? I am a crier and just reading your info makes me cry. I know there will be a lot of crying going on. I'm praying for all of them to get through this tough week. They are all awesome. Blessings to all. Claire

That being said, I'll pass on to you all the other info I can think of that may be useful... Most of all I want you all the know that it's been a pleasure getting to know some of you and I hope we continue to keep in communication AFTER graduation, because that's when you need the support of ARMY FAMILY the most. My heartfelt congradulations go out to the brave and tough Echo Co. soldiers. Thank You so very much for your service to your country and for being our Guardians of Freedom!!!!! For those of you who have sons, husbands, friends, etc. who'll NOT be able to come home after graduation because they're going to Airborne or the like, please make sure to bring them their CIVILIAN CLOTHING!!!!! After graduation they are able to go into Columbus and other outlaying communities on the weekends and they all want to wear civies instead of uniforms so they can feel 'normal' for a couple of days. Also make sure to bring their cell phones if they have one...even in Airborne they'll be able to call whenever they want when they are not working.

***ANOTHER quick "hint" for today: If you are looking to bring something special for the soldiers to hand out, here is what one lady did and was a HUGE hit (especially with my son): She got those small lunch sacks and put in all different types of mini candy bars. What does your soldier seem to crave the MOST, candy, energy drinks and a home cooked meal! My son thought he had gone to heaven when a woman out of the blue started going from soldier to soldier handing these bags out, the minute we got into the car he started to tear into the CANDY! :) At the time I thought to myself, "boy I wish I'd thought of that" and was grateful someone else had the foresight.

Hello ScottsMom99....So nice to meet you. I am not sure if my Will is the same Will you spoke of. My Will is #116 and is not part of the National Guard, however he has been assignment to join what is known as "The Old Guard" which is stationed out of Fort Myers, next to Washington DC. They are the Honor Guard that participates in the ceremonies like Tomb of the unknown solider, Presidential and high ranking Official Burials , etc. When the Queen was recently in DC, this was the company that she inspected. They are also responsible for the military protection of Washington DC, the White House, and the President. Will even had to get a background check from secret service so that he could get a White House clearance pass! What is Scotts last name or number? Will has told me a few names. Looking forward to the 9th & 10th !!!

ADVICE/REQUEST...At the Turning Blue ceremony you will leave the bleachers and approach your soldier who has to remain in formation...standing at attention. When you get to him is when he can 'be at ease'. This is when you'll be able to give him the warmest, biggest hug you've ever given him and place the Blue Cord on his uniform. **Now, this is actually more of a request than advice: PLEASE look around and see if there are other soldiers standing there 'at attention' because they have no family/friends there. I ask of you wonderful ECHO Company family members to approach these soldiers and tell them how proud you are..thank them for their service and see if they would like to wait for their drill sgt. to place their blue cord on them or if you could have the honor...most of these brave soldiers standing there with nobody around...will love you for this!!! I personally had the honor of placing the blue cord on my son's 'battle buddy' and will never forget his sincere words of, "Yes, Mam that would be real nice of you...Thank you Mam." By the way, his family ended up coming later in the day and were there for graduation..if not, I would have adapted him for the remainder of our time and had him hang out with us. A wonderful Army Pal of mine just had this experience and she put on several blue cords for soldiers and took them back to Uchee Creek for some homecooked meals. She said they were very appreciative. *** So there you go, that's my personal request that I tell everyone...thank you for keeping your eyes peeled. Hooah! Lisa

Well another day brings another day of information...***Someone asked about how the soldiers will enter Kanell Field. They will enter according to their platoon. So first platoon will come in first followed approximately seven steps behind will be second platoon, and so forth. Your soldier will NOT be in numbered sequence within the platoon formation of their roster number. It goes from tallest to shortest, down each line. I'm told they always go in this type of formation so when approaching the enemy they don't really know how many men are really behind because the tall soldier is blocking the view.

....What to wear for the ceremonies (Turning Blue and Graduation)? I seen all types of dress, from more formal to very casual. However, I would say the majority went inbetween and wore what I would call business casual (khakis and button up shirt). I personally wore jeans both days and felt comfortable and never out of place. The Turning Blue Ceremony is when your soldier will be wearing his formal Class A uniform. Graduation they will wear their ACU (camos). However, I seen more people 'dress up' for graduation the other. I also noticed that wives and girlfriends seem to be the ones 'dressed up'. :) If you'd like, you can click on my icon, right next to this posting and go to my album marked Graduation and there will be many pics to look at... Wearing RED on FRIDAY is a great suggestion!!! Congratulations to your sons, husbands, boyfriends, etc and all their buddies in Echo Co. One day closer to graduation! HOOAH!! Until tomorrow.... Lisa

More than likely the first place you'll go on Sand Hill is the Rec Center (a.k.a the visitor center). Be on the lookout for the table that is selling portraits of your soldier in his Class A uniform (expensive, but worth every penny)...that being said, make sure to bring the PLASTIC it can get very expensive, quickly with all the DVDs and sourveniers you can buy. Then go into the auditorium, which is through a doorway by this photo table and get GOOD SEATS for the Family Briefing. There will be a slide show where the commander will introduce the captain and some of the drill sgts your soldiers have told you about. It is AFTER this that you'll be asked to walk to Kanell Field, where you'll sit on bleachers and watch as your soldier marches onto the field with the rest of his company for the first time. They start marching from the far corner of the field... Which leads me to my next advice for the day...*** I recommend that you bring binoculars, a blanket and an umbrella (depending on the weather) to this event. The blanket is multi-purpose, if it's a little chilly you can cover your legs (especially those wives and girlfriends who are dressed up in high heels and a dress..)or you can use it to sit on (those bleachers get to feeling hard after awhile). TO BE CONTINUED ON THE NEXT POST...

It's my understanding that FTX is about to begin for your brave soldiers, so before I start my next round of advice I'm going to cheat...I’ve cut and pasted what the commander posted for the families of Foxtrot Co (who graduated in February) to give you some insight on what your soldiers will encounter on their march to Honor Hill...**** The first 4 days of their final FTX (field training exercise) was extremely cold -- temps in the low 20s at night as they slept underneath the stars. Today began the final phase of their training -- it's called the crucible. The weather warmed up some but it rained most of the day, but that did not dampen the spirits of these warriors. It is amazing to watch them transform from the men they were when they arrived here last fall to what they were today -- wet, muddy, cold, but fighting on to complete the mission, motivated the whole way. Incredible efforts by all. These men conducted raids, ambushes, reacted to enemy contact, fought through an urban area, and encountered different scenarios at every turn -- tonight, they will establish patrol bases and ambushes while the opfor (opposing force or bad guys) will comb the woods looking for them. They'll depart at dawn, move cross-country, and conduct a series of missions again -- all with little sleep and carrying all of their food, ammunition and water on their backs. Tomorrow night at 8:00 pm, we will have what's called the Honor Hill ceremony where the soldiers will march back onto Sand Hill through a gauntlet of 900 soldiers that are cheering them on (and excited that they too will walk the gauntlet one day soon). Under the glint of bon fires, the soldiers will recite the soldiers' creed, pay respects to the men before us that have given us our freedom, and receive their coveted cross rifles in a short ceremony. Then, like all good soldiers, they will return to the barracks, tell wild tales of their exploits in the field as they shower and clean up, then sleep as deeply as they ever have and dream of their loved ones.****

No worries Stevenswife. You have every right to be upset. These types of things simply are not acceptable and are unfortanuate that they even take place at all, but then again, welcome to the real world right? I am sorry to hear of your difficulties at home. I really can't imagine what it is like for spouses in the military. You should be held in the highest reguard, as it must be an almost unbearable sacrifice. Not having Will at home with me has been much more difficult than I ever would have imagined, however I suspect it pales in comparision to what you and the other spouces go through. Like I said, we must all support one another and band together. You certainly did not offend me, and steven and your family will be in my prayers. 18 days and counting

Hey Stevenswife…………I too say go ahead and vent. You have that privilege and should be able to do so. I do not like to hear this type of feedback and it angers me to hear that we might be fighting amongst ourselves, when we should be building each other up. The one thing that I would temper is the too often and too easy ability of categorizing individuals or groups. My son, Will, fits your description, that being, he is a “younger kids under 20”, however, MOMMY and DADDY have NEVER given him what he always wanted. Will has worked for and earned what he has, as I would suspect is the case for many of the fine soldiers in E company. Will would not be so careless and indignant as the others you mentioned. Will has been raised differently than that. I too have heard rumblings of antics that go on, have gone on, and unfortunately, will continue to go on in spite of best intentions. The ARMY, like so fine many organizations, is a melting pot of society, and like always, there will be those that do not share the majority values and rules, a small minority tend to spoil and tarnish that which should be viewed as honorable. We ALL, FAMILIES and SOILDERS alike, need to band together, put down the finger pointing, shed the accusations and come together to strengthen one another, not tear one another down. Hooah to all the Soldiers, and those that support them with positive words of encouragement!!! BRING ON AUGUST 9 & 10

Hey stevenswife-feel free to vent. My husband Pvt. Medina couldn't stand the "little boys" at first because some of them were getting them smoked all the time b/c they couldn't shut their mouth. And since he grew up in the military- he had no tolerance for that. So you can imagine what some of the letters sounded like he wrote me.lol It did get a little better as time went on but he is ready to come home and get away from there cuz he doesn't like paying for other peoples mistakes. Like you say- when they grow up and have a family they will understand. Not to much longer!!!

yes we got a call from steven yesterday...he surprised me and called at 10.30 am...he stated that the pt test was today and he was still worried about it due to the pushups....that is the only area he has trouble with and now some of the guys are giving him a hard time....which is making me mad.........they are razzing him because before he left he was a mr. mom so to speak while i was working full time......these younger kids need to realize in this day and age you can't have the mindset that its the woman's place to stay home and the man's job to work...go figure its not the older guys with families to support its all the young kids under 20 who have mommy and daddy to give them whatever they want......kids what can you say....they are in for a rude awakening when they "grow up".....some guys are also giving him a hard time about his pt......he made marksmen on rifle qualif., has almost 80% on his run, almost 70% on situps...so his one area of diffuclty is pushups...instead of giving him a hard time about it show your 7 army values and help him and thanks to his battle buddy..don't know your name but you are helping him.....its everyone else that need to grow up......sorry everyone but i've been hearing this for a few weeks and needed to vent and get the message out that what you say to someone does have an effect...sometimes a negative one at that

I am staying at Uchee Creek Campground upon one of your early recomendations! You have me a bit perplexed with the time zone straddling comment. Would you be kind enough to email me when you get back? I would like to gain a bit more specifics and do not wish to bore the rest of the group. Please email me at nblome@humesbarrington.co m when you can. I would greatly appreciate it, and thanks inadvance for your assistance.

Hello everyone...I'm going on vacation starting the end of July and first part of August. I can't wait, we get to finally see my son Brandon...we're flying him from Fort Hood, TX to where we're vacationing in Arizona for the weekend. So after looking at my calendar I realized I should start my little tid bits of advice for your journey ahead...to Fort Benning and graduation. Here's my advice for today (with many to follow): When going to Turning Blue and Graduation make sure to leave EARLY so you get good parking, good seating and don't get caught in a traffic jam at the CheckPoint leading to Sand Hill...You'll need to make sure you have your driver's license ready at the checkpoints. I would recommend getting there early both days...ARRIVING a minimum of 1 hour early...not LEAVING your location with only 1 hour to go...Getting a good seat will get you great pictures! KEEP IN MIND, if you are coming from a different time zone MAKE SURE you set you clock/watches to reflect Eastern Time Zone, and if you're staying at Uchee Creek Campground, you are straddling two different time zones, so be aware! Tomorrow and the next I am captaining a relay race that stretches 130 miles, so I won't be able to check in. So be looking for more info starting on Monday and each day that follows (STAY TUNED....lol). Have a great day and even better weekend! Lisa

We received phone calls 2 days in a row also. It's great. Lots of new orders came in. Ours was not as great as where he was told he was going before. No explanation for the changes. My son has found his calling and has done super ever since he entered. We're so proud of him. We are also so grateful and appreciative of all of the drill sergeants and all who are in charge of our soldiers. Thank you sooo much for all you do to change our men into successful, proud soldiers. You help change lives! God bless you all and keep everyone safe and in His loving care. One of my favorite scriptures. hey everybody...i just got my graduation packet on sat. we all will receive a call on the 1st to let us know if they graduate. the schedule is as follows.....family briefing at 10...turning blue at 11am then they have a pass from 12pm -10pm.....we have the married spouse briefing at 2pm...graduation is 9 am after graduation the guys will get their final orders and the go ahead to leave then we can head for home....although stevens last letter he was concerned that he won't graduate....he needs the following for the pt test ...pushups 40, situps 50, 2 mile run 16:36...he has pushups 18...situps 52 and his run is at a 15:11 the only thing he needs to work on his is pushups...they need 60% in all areas to graduate...if he doesn't pass he will either graduate on time and have a pt holdover or they will put him thru the 14 weeks of training again.....i'm sure they are some guys facing this but with his determination to come home with us and to the kids he will do it...he will need a 24 to his 60% for pushups and i know he can do it!!!!!!!!!!3 weeks and 4 days till we see our guys!!!!!!!!!!HOOAH!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

He lost so much weight i want to make him proud cuz he stayed on me about my weight until he left and i kept telling him i wouldnt lose the weight then about a week after he left i woke uip and decided to make him proud and go ahead and lose the weight lol. Thanks for the compliment. He is having problems with push ups and thats the only thing gonna hold him up. That and the potential whole being in the infirmary for like 3 days or so. Btw i dont know who puts all these pics up but i would like to take the time to thank them too, my brother is the only family other than my mom i have left now that my dad passed away and even though he is far away its nice bieng able to see his progress, it makes it easier.

One important thing I've forgotten to ask...DO YOU WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS? If so...THANK YOU! If not, and don't know why...by wearing red you are showing your support for our brave military men and women. Since the day my son left my door step and got into the car with his recruiter I've worn my ARMY bracelet EVERYDAY and wear red on Fridays...and will continue to. This may sound weird, but it gives me a feeling of closeness. For more information about wearing red on Fridays please check out: http://www.snopes.com/politics/war/redfriday.asp

Stevenswife- I'm not positive about the what's discussed in the married soldier/spouse meeting since it's my son that's in the military but it's my understanding that they will discuss how the spouse will make the transition to the 'home unit' of the soldier, arrangements and paperwork that will need to be filled out and also support groups for the spouse; they'll give you references. From some of the spouses of the military men that I know I would highly encourage you to go so if you have any questions you'll be able to ask them at this briefing...so start making a list of questions so you can make sure everything you need to know is covered. *****As for knowing when your soldier will graduate or not...sometimes you won't know until almost graduation. If your soldier is passing all his PTs and doesn't get hurt or fall sick for too many days there is a high probability that he WILL graduate. ProudSister- CONGRADULATIONS on the big loss. I know it takes a lot of determination and hard work to getting into shape and you should be commended for your accomplishment..WAY TO GO!!! Since your brother has made it past boot training and is now in OSUT I would imagine that if he doesn't graduate he'll be placed in another company to complete the OSUT portion and not have to completely retake the whole 14 weeks.***** You are correct, the drill sgts do read these posts and a BIG SHOUT out to them for a job well done...THANK YOU DS for making our soldiers what they will become in the future...alert, disciplined, team motivated freedom warriors!!!!! And THANK YOU chaplain, for continuing this webpage for the families!!!! Lisa, ARMY STRONG/FAMILY STRONG Proud mom of an American Soldier

Hi everyone...be looking in the mail, you should be receiving information about graduation any time now. It'll have a small map and detail the events that will take place...Thursday will be Family Briefing, Turning Blue, Family Day Pass and Married Soldier/Spouse briefing...on Friday will be graduation. It'll list the location and times. I can feel the excitement on this website as you get closer and closer to graduation; I too am very excited for you all. But first they have a few obstacles to overcome before they are granted their blue cord and the honor of graduating, a couple of important PTs are coming up and FTX... I'm going to send you a website to check out what it means to complete FTX and make it to Honor Hill. Please take a couple of minutes and watch the video..it’s a MUST SEE https://www.infantry.army .mil/itb/, then click on the ARMY videos on the left. Make sure to have kleenex... HOOAH! Lisa

Said it was great. Mentioned they can receive cookies, and brownies go over really well. Said if you send some, make sure there's enough for everyone or the DS's take them. So I'll be sending about 50 along with a separate bag for DS's. Claire

I have a question that I hope someone can address for me. When I first started going through the many pages and sites that are available here, I found a page that gave a day-by-day journal of a new recruit, and detailed the events that he and his platoon went through. I have found this not only fascinating, but very helpful, so that I can follow what Will and the guys are doing. It is another means of keeping me connected to Will. To date, I have yet to find anything similar that describes what goes on in AIT. The question I have is simply this......Does anyone know of a similar page, site, url that give the civilian a snapshot of what our guys will be going through? If you know of one, please reply with the web address. Thanks in advance, and looking forward to seeing all of our proud MEN in August. Hooah!

Received a letter yesterday. Last day of boot camp is Friday, July 6th. Then on to AIT. 3 weeks into AIT, July 28th, starts Gold Phase. Lisa (our informant) I'm assuming that's the last phase? We're so happy you've been through this and help us out. Did land navigation in the dense woods. An exciting evening, wonder how much trouble they got into. Apparently their was a shaving cream war between platoons 2,3 & 4. But lots of fun. They probably really needed that. Claire

Hi everyone! This is the proud Mom of Pvt. Josh Frey. Just discovered the comments on this site, and absolutely love it! It's very important to surround yourself with loved ones and people who know what you're going through during these tough, but awesome, times. Hoo-ah to us all! I'm one of the "lucky" ones whose been through this before. Does it get easier the second time? No way? I miss Josh like crazy! Josh's older brother, Stephen, is a United States Marine. Picking up rank of Sgt. next week. Been in since Sept. 01 (yes, one week after 9/11), he's served 2 tours in Iraq. Last time recieving a Purple Heart for injuries recieved, but we won't dwell on that. He's currently stationed in Japan for 3 years. So he's "safe" for awhile. He left for Japan on Christmas morning, so be prepared for things like that. Am i a proud Mom? You better believe it. Of both my sons. So proud that they both chose to serve their country, along with all of your loved ones serving, and preparing to serve, also. Hang in there everyone! JoshFreysMom

Hey there Echo family! pksmama I'm Pvt.Roos 410, proud mom. I'm so happy to hear that our sons are friends, that is great news. Anthony is also my last and I know that feeling, about missing him. He keeps me laughing,he is a clown! Happy Birthday to your soldier! I look forward to meeting everyone Aug 9 & 10. We don't know where Anthony will go next. We have reservations at the Four Point Sheration. I heard exit 8 was a good location, so we went with that. It seems all our soldiers are very happy with there decisions. It sure helps me feel better when I see them all smiling and looking so great! Thank god for that. Keep 'em safe and health, in my prayers all the time! Hoooah to all

Interesting about already completing Nick at Night...but as I've learned each company is a little bit different...and yet the same. :) I was looking over my letters from Brandon when he was in boot camp and around this time...WEEK 8...they were out in the field camping for 2 nights in their bivouac; which is a temporary shelter built by soldiers. He wrote that it was around this time that the guys started their countdown towards graduation...several more weeks of training, preparation for FTX, a week of recovery...boom, graduation! Very busy from here on out as excitement and preparation builds. So how about them soldiers from Echo Company Aug07...a big HOOAH!!!! Lisa

Pvt 324 Brian Meyer's mom here. He mentioned in a letter he will be based in Germany. He also said that they would be deployed shortly thereafter (?). It was unclear but I'm assuming to the Mideast. I hope to know more soon. We're so proud and excited for him but of course worried. But, that's what AIT is for and all we can do is wish our boys the best and pray they stay safe. Nancy

Lisa, thanks for info. Kurt wrote us about Nick at Night already. Loved it! He said Blue phase started right after it though. I thought that was still part of boot camp. Oh well, we're close enough either way that I can send the card for graduating from boot camp and moving on to AIT. Young is going with Kurt to Ft. Campbell. Any family members out there for him? Hey Lisa....exciting info to hear about Brandon. My son will is wanting to go that same path. We were able to "do the happy dance" this past weekend as Will called and we had the longest conversation over the phone to date...it was great. Will told me that they already did "Nick-at-Night" that they did the live fire thing at night and watched and heard the tracers go by, which sounded awesome! Will has also told me that he has been assigned and "has a signed contract" for his next round of ARMY life. Have you heard of such a thing? that is, a :signed contract?" I would hate to have Will get his hopes up for this next round, which seems to be quite an honor and very unique, to have those plans dashed at the last minute. If you have any insight to this, I would be very greatful in hearing your input. I also wonder what the guys will be doing for July 4th? If there was one place to be for a fireworks show, I suspect an ARMY Infantry unit provides a very unique experience! Hooah!!! proud son of Will Blome, PV2 # 116

Hello to croos family. Apparently my son is a friend of your son's there. Thank you. He turns 18 on Friday, and he is my last baby, and I miss him terribly. He says his best friend there is #414 so if you are reading this - please feel free to email me for a special thank you ....GrannyNic05@aim.com Also, to Zach's family - I think my son is sitting next to your son in the Inbrief album. He appears to be between canteens 409 and 407, with his not showing. Is anyone else's loved one going to Germany? Of course my son's recruiter assured him he would go to Ft. Riley, KS if he did this (less than 2 hours from home - unlike Germany), but we are dealing with it!

Boot camp lasts 9 weeks...then onto AIT. The last night of boot camp is called Nick at Night...it's an obstacle course at night with lots of exciting elements going off. The soldiers will march to Honor Hill after a week of FTX, which is a week before graduation. The last week is called recovery week (don't let the name fool you), it one of the hardest weeks they face because all they do is clean and inventory from sun up till sun down. Hope this helps, Lisa

Lisa, Congratulations, my son is hoping eventually for the Rangers. He is going to the 101st Airborne, Screaming Eagles, Air Assault at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. I believe he wrote that 1 or 2 others are also going. Deborah, yes that is my son, Kurt, next to Zach. They look so very happy and pleased with themselves. Have not made reservations yet, but we'll be there. Trying to get details down. Live in Colorado, but plan on stopping to see my mother in Ohio for a few days before heading to Georgia. Trying to decide on flying or driving. Didn't know the orders could change, thanks for the info. Sent a package with q-tips, chap stick, toothpaste, etc. Wrapped everything individually in wrapping paper, for a chuckle and something unexpected. Letter said HAHA very funny. Had to open it in front of everyone. Didn't know that would happen. No phone call in weeks. On weekends we always forward our home line to my husband's cell phone so we won't miss a phone call, but not yet. Does anyone know when boot camp officially ends and AIT starts. I've gotten a card to send. Should be very soon. God bless all of you.

Thank you for the congrats...you are right, we couldn't be prouder. So far military life has not been the easiest and Brandon has faced several obstacles like lost paperwork and several 'on-holds' but he's persevered and kept his goal. So this means that much more because of all the determination. ****Just a quick word of caution- the orders your soldier gets may change before he graduates boot camp. The last couple of companies that have graduated I believe went to their scheduled destinations, however the ones before them changed several times leading to the very day of graduation. *** May the sun shine on all our soldiers today wherever they may be! It took me quite awhile to find him but well worth the hunt. I'm so glad to now know the name of the fine young man sitting next to my son!! I'm still a little in the dark on my son's future station. No phone call since the forth week of May. I've gotten many letters, thank goodness, but I'm aching for a phone call. Do you know how long your son will have at home before having to report to his new station? Please share your news :o). Haven't heard anyone say what soldiers are going where and into what areas after graduation in August. Are we allowed to tell (brag) on them. I've been waiting because I've known for awhile. They should all be extremely proud of themselves and what they've accomplished so far. I know the families and friends are.

OMG! It's so awesome to see some updated shots of our soldiers! Our soldier Pvt. Roos, Anthony looks so happy. He is living his dream, I can see it in his face, and for that I am happy, and so very proud. WE can't wait to see him in Aug. Reservations are made. This is the best link a family can have when there loved one is not reachable by phone. At least you can still feel somewhat connected. Thank god for the chaplains and any other persons who put this together, keeping it running! You have no idea how important it is to the families of the new soldiers and this new way of life. It's hard at times, to have to wait to hear anything. This at least makes it more do-able, and nothing compares to seeing your soldier right there on the screen. Thank you all and bless you. From the bottom of my heart I appreicate all you do for me (us). Army Strong...Hoooay!

We stayed at Uchee Creek Campground and Lisa is sound on her advise about how nice it is there. Plus you get a chance to meet other military families that are there for R&R. The nicest folks in the world. We rarely met someone that we did not strike up a conversation. The area is beautiful and runs along side the Chattahoochee River. If you are a nature lover don't miss it... the deer, army-dillos, birds and other wildlife are abundant. Rhonda Proud Mom of PFC Matthew Parga-Manasse - stationed with the Ranger Training Battalion

Hey y'all! Wanted to comment on Victory Drive. The area is a bit seedy. We went there to go to Ranger Joe's (GREAT place so visit it during the day if you get a chance), but I would not want to stay there over night. Consider this... it is the last/first (depending on which way you are going) exit to a military base. I don't know that I saw much in the way of mom & pop, but hourly might be a bit more descriptive. Exits 10, 7 & 6 off of 185 are good. Hope this helps. Rhonda

Who's your soldier's company commander/captain? My son's was Cpt. Schwartz and Col.Scheffield.... I have their addresses because I've written and received emails, so let me know. Sorry I can't help out with the motel question...we stayed at Uchee Creek in the cabins which was really nice. I hope you all get to do the HAPPY DANCE this weekend when the phone rings...and if you do please make sure to post and let us know how your soldier is doing.... Oh, one more thing, it's nice to know who your soldier is and for the families to know if your soldiers are in the same platoon or not. For example: Lisa, Proud mom of Pvt. Brandon Jones #324...the first number in the roster number tells you what platoon he's in...which is 3rd platoon. My son's battle buddy, Pvt. Johnson was #323... Hopefully I'm not making this more confusing. TGIF! Lisa, Proud mom of an American Soldier, Pvt. Brandon Jones (FORMERLY of 2/58 C Co. Nov06 graduate, #324)

Does anyone know anything about the "mom and pop" motels on Victory Drive? Names such as Ponderosa, Plaza, Georgian, Candelight, Sunset, Travel Inn, and Thunderbird? I can't find any source that gives me recommendations as to their visual appeal, amenities, etc. Sometimes these smaller motels can be a real bargain - sometimes not. Anyone know anything, or any way to find out? Thanks.

Did you know that you can download pictures into your profile? Just click on your icon and fill out the information about yourself and add pictures to albums you create...that's how I'm able to have Brandon's picture as my icon. About downloading pictures...Let's see if we can walk you through this...it seems more complicated than it is. When looking at the picture you want, send it to yourself (your email) Then copy to a folder. Go back to this website and your profile, then click on albums..click upload, there will be a browse button click on it, hopefully the pic will be there. That's how I do it. Then click on pic, then open, then start upload, then you can write whatever in title and caption, then click save. Then go back to album it should be there if you get that far. ***I know it sounds like a lot of steps, but once you do the first time it's really easy and only takes a few seconds. Let me know if this works for you. Good luck! Lisa

Yes, HAPPY FLAG DAY...I know my flag at home is waving proudly!!! This is just an FYI about what a platoon, unit, battalion means...I had to ask my son when he was in boot camp because I wasn't in the know, and maybe you all are feeling the same...so here goes: Platoon: is an unit/group of around 40-80 people; Squad: is an unit/group of around 10-20 people; Company: is an unit/group of around 120-500 people; Battalion: is an unit/group of 3 companies; Brigade: is an unit/group of 3 battalions

Lisa is on the money regarding asking your soldier what they can get - if they can get - a package. I printed off pictures posted by Chaplain (please read "Saint") Rusack so Matt could see them then he would write back identifying the other guys. He loved getting the weather report. Musical cards are a big hit with some. I also hunted down some military humor sites and sent stuff from there. Here are a few: http://www.skippyslist.com/skippylist.html (my personal favorite, that Skippy is a hoot and a Texan to boot!). http://www.strategypage.com/humor/default.asp (this site will keep you busy for a while). Also, www.military.com has good news that is not media strewn. By accident I met a DS at ATL airport the day Matt went in and he advised me to get my news only from military sites - not to watch the media meatheads on TV. haha There are so many websites for soldier's families I could not list them here, but google it and you will find a wealth of information. This was a very emotional time for those of us at B Co., but the support was HUGE. We decided that while they were at IBT/AIT we would stay upbeat enjoying the moments knowing that our men were stateside and safe... that the hard part would come with deployment. That has turned out to be very true. Several of our guys have gotten their orders. They are headed to units that will be deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan so enjoy this time. You will love the confidence and pride your soldier will have at graduation. Matt's grew even more after Airborne. One thing at "Turning Blue"... they had the soldiers create a graphic design for their platoon and had it printed on T-Shirts with the name of each soldier in the platoon. By the time I realized this they were sold out of Matt's platoon! He has Psalms 3:6 tatooed on him and they put that on the T-Shirt. Not to worry, when we got in the car Matt handed me a package that had DVD's and that T-Shirt inside. Rhonda Proud Mom of PFC Matthew Parga-Manasse (former B Co) in hold at RTB

Your soldier may or may not get those letters you write immediately...he may get several of them at one time and have to do lots of push-ups to receive them; but all soldiers will tell you the push-ups are worth it. I almost forgot...send CALLING CARDS with quite a few minutes, your son will more than likely share this card with one or two of his buddies that doesn't have the resources or support and will share his minutes; which many of them do. As for calls...I was lucky, my son wrote home often but I only received fewer than a handful of calls the whole time he was in boot camp. One time he called we weren't there so he left a voice mail and I didn't erase it until after boot camp graduation because I could replay it when I needed to hear his voice. There may be several reasons you don't get a call... the lines for the phones are VERY long. It may take upward of 3 or so hours to be able to make a 2 minute phone call. The drill sgts will determine when and how long your soldier will get to call home, so if there's been any disciplinary actions made in a particular platoon, the priviledge may be taken away. Or your soldier may give his minutes to someone else, like a husband/father who needs more than a couple minutes to talk with his family; which also happens often. So there are many different factors when it comes to getting phone calls. Your soldier will sometimes know in advance when they'll call, it's usually on a Saturday or Sunday, but once again the priviledge can be hanked at the last minute. That being said, I hope you all get to experience the happy dance when that phone rings this weekend! Best wishes, Lisa

I'll try this again...I sent two messages...they posted weird and when I came back awhile later there's nothing here..hmmmm. First, thank you for your kind comments. I feel honored being able to assist family and friends of soldier just entering into boot camp. It's the bonds that we form now that just may come in handy later on. Who's to say there may be a time when our boys are in the same area, going through the same things...and this WILL BE the time where we need to support one another the most and hopefully the bonds here will enable all of us to be able to reach out for that much needed support. I am very blessed to say that I have developed life-long friends through this site and once again need to thank Chaplain Rusack...THANK YOU!!! Okay, onto answering some questions. As for when to arrive....I would recommend arriving at LEAST an hour early for both days. Our experience on the day of Family Day/Turning Blue, there was a horrible accident leading to Sand Hill and I was greatful we gave ourselves time to get there before it started. PHEW! Each company and platoon are different...depending on their drill sgts and how many disciplinary measures have to be made can determine what your soldier may or may NOT receive. My recommendation is to write your soldier and ask him to write you what you can or cannot send...their ds will let them know. It's best to ask first than to send and have your soldier disciplined by having to do a multitude of pushups. If they CAN get items here are some suggestions and popular items...flavored cough drops/two bags only...reason for this is because it's like candy, foot powder, cushion foot insoles to help with their shin splints, self-addressed stamped envelopes for writing letters back to you, deodorant, chapstick, clippings from the sports section of the news paper, and pictures from home of family and friends. Most of all write your soldier OFTEN. Hearing from home does your soldier that much needed support and drive to get through boot camp...

Hello Echo Co!! Lisa - thank you so much for your 'experienced' input on family/graduation day. Do you suggest an early arrival of an hour or so? All I know is I want to miss absolutely NOTHING of my son's special day & graduation. :o) They've all worked SO hard & I know this is going to be something none of us will ever forget. One more thing, do you know if we can send care packages of toiletries (sp?). My son has mentioned certain brand names he can't get at the PX so I'd like to send what he wants but am unsure if that is permitted by the DS's. I would also be curious to know if others are getting regular calls from your soldiers. I've been blessed to receive very regular letters, but only one call which has been 3 weeks ago. I'm so anxious to talk with my son. No matter how much time goes by, I still miss him terribly. God Bless You All! HOOAH!! Deborah - proud Mom of Zach Robinson 409

The day of Turning Blue there is also a family briefing. You will need to arrive early for several reasons. 1. Always arrive to Sand Hill early so you don't have to wait in a long line of traffic to get through the check point. 2. When you get there early you'll be able to sign up for formeral Class A pictures for your soldier, which takes place AFTER Turning Blue. 3. There will be souveneir tables set up for you to browse through. 4. TO GET THE BEST SEAT for the family briefing. The family briefing will consist of the Colonel addressing family/friends about what your soldier has been up to for the last 14 weeks. He'll introduce you to some of the drill sgts and there will be a slide show. It's after the briefing when you'll walk to Kanell Field where your soldier will march onto for the ceremony...and the very first time you get to see your soldier. As time moves on I'll be posting suggestions and advice on what to bring and expect on your journey to Fort Benning. It's an amazing experience!!! HOOAH! Lisa

Hello y'all. Another place to get local news from Fort Benning is the Bayonet newspaper. Last week's edition (we were down there for Matt's grad from Airborne) had several articles on the changes taking place with IBT (Now the 198th Infantry Brigade). Apparently several changes are taking place. Here is a link to that paper. http://www.thebayonet.com/pdf/2007/052507.pdf Another site we used once we figured it out is https://www.atrrs.army.mi l/atrrscc/search.aspx This is the Army training website listing all classes. Ft. Benning school no. is 809, your soldiers MOS is 11B, and they are in OSUT (One Site Unit Training). Here is some info from there on the OSUT Infantry Training classes: i. For course scheduling information contact Mr. Jeff Hughes DSN 835-0373, Comm (706) 545-0373 j. Hello everyone! Here's a couple of sites that are very helpful. The first one is for ordering military wear...and for babies...I've ordered onsies for several of my friends that I've gotten to know on this website. The website is www.cafepress.com And for graduation dates I've referred to the Fort Benning website and it shows graduation date for Echo company as being August 17th...and Foxtrot company as graduating on August 10th. The official Fort Benning site is... www.benning.army.mil/198t h/ I'm sorry if I'm creating more confusion...here's what I would recommend doing. You should have received a letter from your soldier's commander...telling you about this site. In the letter it should have a way for you to contact him. I would send an email to him for graduation confirmation. When my son Brandon was in bootcamp I sent an email to his commander and got a quick response back. The official graduation packet and letter that gets sent out you'll receive just a few weeks before actual graduation so don't wait for that...lodging will be filled up by then and your airline tickets will go up as well. Hi all, Am sure many of you have seen already but just in case - found last night that there are (finally) some still photos out there of Echo Company on the www.soldierschapel.info website. If you are not familiar with the site - once in, select 2-58 from the top. This will take you into a Photos page and you will see Echo Company listed. (I think this is where the Aug 17 date started causing confusion.) We were able to search and pick out my brother in several of the in-brief photos so was pretty neat. Looks like the Chaplain (who I think maintains the site) tried to get several pics from all angles so hopefully you can catch a glimpse of your soldiers!! We have one form letter from the Army and those from my brother all listing August 10 as the graduation date as well.

Thank you so much ADKtracker for the info on the service flags. It's exactly what I was looking for. I just need to have that flag on my window to represent my son and all of yours. It's the least I can do. He is always the first thing on my mind every morning, and the last every night. Not to mention throughout the day. :-) My form letter from Anthony states graduation is Aug. 10th too. Anthony says there are a lot of really cool guys in his platoon. Sounds like they are making a wonderful family. I'm so happy for him and for all of you. It sounds like they are depending on each other. Anthony also said the food is GOOD! So rest assured they are eating well. Not much time to eat, 3-5 minutes. I can't imagine eating that fast, sounds like everything is done very fast~! Take care Ecko family~! But thats the military-nothing is usually set in stone! mommackiewicz-i'm sure its my husband, not alot of people with out last name! lol I do hope they get along, my husband was raised Army so he can definetly be a hardnose at times!

My son mentioned earlier in a letter that his bunkmate was Medina, possibly your husband. Question - we've received info that graduation for E-Co, 2nd Battalion, 58th Inf. Regt. is Aug. 10th. Saw on a different website today that the date was Aug. 17th. Does anyone know if it's been changed or if the 17th was a predicted old date? Very difficult to try and recognize people in the photos, but we're trying. Thanks.

Hello Anthony's mom...I'm not sure about the small flag in the window...however, I bought my flag, which is quite large and made of excellent quality including the pole from Costco for a very good price. It's not freestanding, but it attaches to our house. We put it right outfront directly infront of our walkway so that everyone who comes to visit will pass by the flag and hopefully gives a moment of pause and thinks of our son and all the military troops in the service. He is doing the basic training, plus the advanced placement. He plans to enroll at a later date in the ROTC Officer program, when he returns to college in the fall. I miss him so much!!! We have never been without communication with him for this length of time, so this is hard for us. My whole family, including husband and 3 siblings, have been writing to him every week. He has written 3 separate letters to us, sharing some of what he is going through at camp. I am so proud of him! It is nice to read messages from other parents in the same situation. Hopeful this is true because I got some great picture's of my son check out my album. Just click on my son's picture and them the album tab. Hi everybody, I just signed up and have noticed that the noticed for the different companies all have very clear still photos of the people at basic training, does anybody know whether or not E Co. will have some of these soon where it will be easier to distinguish people? I miss my boyfriend, James, more than anything and it would mean the world to be able to see a picture. Thank you The PROUD girlfriend of Pvt. James Marion Self IV!!!!!

Hello to all of the other military families...My "little" brother is PFC Borst, he is part of E co, 2nd Battalion 58th Infantry Regiment and graduates basic in August. Our entire family is very proud of him and can't wait to see him. My cousin is also in the Army stationed at another base in NE Georgia (I think). Anyway gald this site is here it's nice to see what they have been doing. I get lots of letters but pics/videos are worth a thousand words!!

Hi, this is Nancy. Our son Brian is in E Co. I've already gotten lots of good information from this site. This is completely new to us so any guidance is really appreciated. I’m sure as time goes on I‘ll be back with more questions. I’ve received two letters from Brian, so far- we are so proud of him. Brian is 26 and is aka “The Beaver” or “Beev”. I would love to hear from anyone who recognizes his name.

WELCOME Stephanie, PROUD Mom of PVT James M. Self #417! They do all look alike at first. It gets easier to distinguish them with time. If Chaplain Rusack is able to post any more pictures those can be enlarged and it is easier to tell. I wonder if she (gf) is talking about going from Basic Infantry Training to Advanced Infantry Training. If they were in a different unit there would be a graduation at the end of IBT and they would be shipped to a different base for AIT. But Ft. Benning is an OSUT (One Station Unit Training) base where both are done consecutively and the graduation is at the end. When they do graduate in August there will be two graduations. On Thursday is the "Turning Blue" ceremony for just your son's company. On Friday is the graduation where all Co/BN/REG are involved. Hope this helps. Hi E Co. My name is Stephanie and my son James will be graduating in August. I keep watching the videos trying to see my son, but I can't tell who's who!!! Does anyone know if something's coming soon where we can distinguish individual boys? By the way, my son's girlfriend mentioned an early graduation (before 8/10). Does anyone know anything about this? Thank you! PROUD MOM OF PVT. JAMES M. SELF #417

Thanks all for the info on the mail. I have been VERY careful to address the envelopes correctly. I didn't realize that each DS could run there platoon(?) as they see fit.I thought it was exactly the same, each group. Guess I have a lot to learn and this site is great. It's so helpful, and comforting for that matter. Thanks for all the sits to check out, think I'll start right now.....good day to all, and many prayers to your soldiers! Proud mom of Pvt.Roos.

Welcome to the wild and crazy world of military family members! It's awesome to see you take advantage of this wonderful website. My son graduated in March and is now stationed in Alaska. I didn't know he would be the avid letter writer he turned out to be, but one thing that really helped was by me sending him self-addressed stamped envelopes with paper. That made the difference in the amount of letters I got from him. He said quite often there was no time to go buy stationary and even having my name and address and his return address already filed out really saved him the moments that got those letters into the mail. Blessings to you on this interesting journey. Proud Mom of a former Fort Benning F-Co soldier, presently an Alaskan Arctic Warrior.

WELCOME Ned Blome, VERY PROUD father of PV2 Will Blome #116. Thank you and your son. Ned, we stayed at the log cabins at Uchee Campground for graduation. We got there on Wed. 5/9. Thurs 5/10 was "Turning Blue" ceremony where you can pin their infantry cord on them. Fri 5/11 was the larger graduation ceremony. The cabins are a great place to stay w/full kitchens and the price is GREAT! Here is a link http://www.benningmwr.com/uchee31905.htm on how to make reservations. Be sure to BOOK EARLY as they fill up fast. We did not get to see Matt before the 'turning blue' ceremony, but afterwards they got to leave with us until 8:00 PM. Like Kimmey said, don't count on anything including the 36 hour pass in between IBT (Infantry Basic Training) and AIT (Advanced Infantry Training). EVERYTHING depends on the DS and how the men are doing. Also, a few families misjudged the weekend the men would be off and went anyway. They went on base looking for the men and ticked off some of the DS. Same with some random phone calls families made to the DS. If you have an issue it is best to call the Red Cross or the Chaplain of the 2/58th to send a message through the proper channels. Rhonda

Many of you are asking about the 36 hour pass. This happens a little over half way of their full training. There are no guarantees they will get 36 hours. We didn't know how long my brothers company was going to get up until the day before. This is based on some guys and platoons getting into too much trouble. So be prepared for anything. No guarantees, it is a day by day basis. HOOAH!!!! Welcome to the Army.

Here's more information you may or may not know that I thought I would share with all the new companies: Basic is 9 weeks. At the very end they will have what is called Nick at Night (lots of TNT and explosives going off...) and they'll have to complete an obsticle course, which is at night (great fun I'm told :)). Once completed they will more than likely get a 36 hour pass, where they'll be able to leave base. When they get back they will start AIT. Be aware...There will not be much time for your soldiers to write you. They will be out in the field camping for a couple of days, learning reconnaissance and inside (close-contact) and urban terrain fighting. They will have many duties and not much sleep during this period. There will be one week leading up to FTX where they will gather ammo and equipment..then FTX (that is where they will be out in the field for a period of 5 or so days)...at the end of this they will march to Honor Hill where they will go through a 'rite of passage' and BECOME infantry men. The last and following week will be RECOVERY (don't fool yourselves, this is one of their worst weeks...they CLEAN and INVENTORY all supplies and equipment and get only a couple hours of sleep if they are lucky)..then GRADUATION! Once they reach week 8 time will really start flying by for them. There is no graduation for leaving basic at week 9...nor going up to Honor Hill (unfortunately). To give you a glimpse of what is to come here is a video of their RITE OF PASSAGE (it brought tears to my eyes and an overabundance of pride).. https://www.infantry.army .mil/itb/, then click on the ARMY videos on the left. Good morning E Company. My name is Ned Blome and my pride and joy, Will Blome is at Fort Benning going through boot camp. We have heard from him a few times via phone as well as through the mail. I am still a bit confussed with his schedule. I know that he is to graduate August 10 with his group, however Will mentioned something to the effect that boot camp will be over before then, that he will have something like a weekend pass where if family of friends were to come down, he would be able to physically leave the base for a day or two. Has anyon e heard anything similiar to this? I know that Will has his AIT training there at Benning and I understood that it was to take place immediatly after Basic Training, so I still question if he has an opportunity to meet with family and friends before the official August 10 graduation. Any insight to this issue would be greatly appreciated so that possible travel arrangements can be made. Thanks in advance, Ned Blome, VERY PROUD father of PV2 Will Blome #116.

The first few weeks of basic are the hardest the DS take total control of the guys! They have to to train them to be infantry men. They can and do hold letters especially if the guys are acting up so tell your guys to do as they are told and things will go smoother for them. Also so you know ahead of time the DS do check this website from time to time. But just for your reassurance my son told me it was the most rewarding thing he has ever done and he is so glad that he did it. He said it was worth all the stuff he had to go through. He leaves for Korea a week from today and I already miss him and he hasn't even left yet! Believe me we all know what you are going through. I've received about 5 letters from him and 2 quick painless phone calls. He left in april and I miss him so much. I am now just learning a couple things about bootcamp but I still have unanswered questions so this website seems great and helpful. i will need all the help I can get with this I don't have any around here. Thank you Debbie & Erv & Rhonda regarding the package suggestions. I will go ahead & check with my son before sending anything just to be on the safe side. I'm anxiously looking forward to that long awaited phone call. :o) To croos104 - I too had heard before my son ever left for basic that soldiers would be required to do push- ups for their mail but only if it was addressed incorrectly. I was concerned about this & have been extra careful to address it as directed by the form letters I received (which showed it differently by the way) but after getting my son's letter explaining how elated he was to get mail I think he would've done as many push-ups as it took to get it. :o) God Bless! WELCOME croos104 and proudsisofptvroos! Thank you, your family and son/brother! How lucky all to have your support! Redundancy becomes B Co, again, if you need anything let us know. We love sending packages, but you may want to ask your soldier before sending anything. Each Company and each Platoon of each Company is different. Again, it all depends on the DS. Some can get packages, some not. Let your soldier guide you in this. Debbie could send her Matt packages, but the one I sent to my Matt he had to open in front of the DS and they took his gel soles, deodorant, but let him keep a few other things. They were not allowed to wear deodorant until the last few weeks. This may or may not be true for your company. The Army reminds me of shifting sand. muahahaha! Enjoy your evening! ZSPROUDMOM, Your package sounds GREAT, but one thing that I may suggest that really helped my son was, GEL-SOLES for his boots, and Q-TIPS to clean his gun! They do ALOT OF MARCHES and the soles really helped him. I know that they sell Q-tips, but he liked it that I sent them to him. Just because he is the kind of kid that hates to spend his own money!HAHA! I also sent 'acne' stuff, because they didn't sell the kind he uses. Also send LOTS OF PICTURES they hang them up in there foot locker. I hope this helps. And yes you will have a BRAND NEW FAMILY by the end of this JOURNEY! If Fort Benning is anything like Fort Knox or Fort Jackson, it will take a week or two for your soldier to get their mail. I think as family and friends, we too, look forward to "mail call" or even better the "phone call". Having the video clips on this site is really a great idea. I have a video of my second son's training, but I had to wait until agter he graduated to see some of the things we went through. My parents received a form letter yesterday illustrating how to properly address the letters but they do not know how to find out my brother's 3 digit roster number. Does that come separately? I too miss my son more than I can possibly express in words. Thanks so much to those willing to walk us 'newbies' through this challenging period. I know from the form letters that our guys can't call until after week 3, but can anyone give me an idea of when they start getting mail? I sent a letter the same day I received the E co mailing address (& many since) but my son keeps requesting letters and he should've received at least some by now. Hi Echo Family you will come to know this website a a life line My son PV2 John Smith now on leave just graduated on April 27th and will be going to Fort Hood on May 21. All I can say is pray everyday for your soldier and all the rest, lean on your friends you make on this web site and know that on Thursday of "Turning Blue" and you finally see you son, husband, etc., will make you forget all the sleepless nights, sitting by the phone on sundays waiting for a call that never comes and then the sundays that they do come. This website carried me thru the 17 weeks with the support from others families and friends and when you see the first picture of your son you will cry , laugh and want to see him even more. Send letters as often as possible and cough drops that is their sugar fix. you will hear it from them before long. I wish all of you the best and pray for your soldiers. PROUD MOM OF PV2 JOHN SMITH HOOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DIANE SMITH

WELCOME ECHO COMPANY FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!! Climb aboard this crazy train of boot camp. There will be highs and lows, questions and lots of waiting in the next 14 weeks. But there's one thing you can always count on and that is the support you'll receive from everyone on here...we know what you are going through and will be able to answer questions, offer advice and support whenever it's needed...and even when it's not. We look forward to getting to know you and your soldier. HOOAH!!! Lisa, Proud mom of an American Soldier, Pvt. Brandon Jones in Fort Hood, TX (boot camp graduate of Charlie Company Nov 06)
