VALUABLE FUTURE INFORMATION!!!!! I want to share some valuable information that will come in handy in the near future: If you are trying to get the best airfare for your soldier to come home on GO TO THIS WEBSITE: www.bluestarmoms.org/airf are.html This website will give you all the ins and outs of getting reasonable airfare prices for your soldier...and believe me, you'll NEED this! NEVER FORGET...You can accompany your soldier inside the airport, to the actual boarding gates...when he gets his tickets and shows his military ID, all you need to do is show your license and they will give you a visitor's pass to go through security (anybody UNDER 18 needs to check in as well so they get a pass, but no ID required). I seen a lot of families in the airport saying their tearful farewells at the security area because they didn't know...I've spread the news to everyone I could... It'll give you that much more time with your loved one before they depart. And we all know that those few moments are so precious and valuable :) I'm amazed not more military families know this...PLEASE spread the word. Lisa

Onto some POINTS OF INTEREST at Fort Benning--- For all you history buffs (or not) you really should check out the National Infantry Museum at Bradley Hall, it's right on the main base with free admission, but VERY interesting!! We had a great time seeing the evolution of the military weapons, uniforms, Hilter's bust, and SO MUCH MORE! I have a few pictures on my Graduation album from the inside of this museum if you want to check it out. For those of you who have soldiers going into Airborne... go check out the Jump Towers at the Airborne barracks and see some of the obstacle course training that they will be doing... you may be lucky and see other soldiers jumping while you're there (we got fortunate and witnessed soldiers doing just that! WOW...that's what your soldiers will be doing...!!!) Looking for a great coffee place on base, go check out a place called Meditations, it's not too far from Burger King/Taco Bell; they have wonderful deli sandwiches and terrific lattes and reasonable prices...mmm, YUM!

Today and tomorrow will be my last postings before graduation. I will be going on vacation for a couple of weeks and won't be taking my laptop. That being said, I'll try to share all the info I can. And a heartfelt CONGRADUATIONS goes out to all the soldiers of Foxtrot Co...thank you for your service to your country and being our Guardians of Freedom!

Laairmom- YES!!! For those who know that their sons/husbands, friends, etc won't be able to come home right after graduation the very best thing for you to bring is CIVILIAN CLOTHING!!!!! They will be able to go into Columbus, and other outlaying communities on the weekends and they would prefer to wear civies than their uniforms so they can feel 'normal' for a couple of days. In Airborne he'll get to talk on his cell phone any time he wants, other than when he's working...so that's another good thing to bring. ...it won't be long now, graduation is right around the corner!! Hooah!!! Lisa

***ANOTHER quick "hint" for today: If you are looking to bring something special for the soldiers to hand out, here is what one lady did and was a HUGE hit (especially with my son): She got those small lunch sacks and put in all different types of mini candy bars. What does your soldier seem to crave the MOST, candy, energy drinks and a home cooked meal! My son thought he had gone to heaven when a woman out of the blue started going from soldier to soldier handing these bags out, the minute we got into the car he started to tear into the CANDY! :) At the time I thought to myself, "boy I wish I'd thought of that" and was grateful someone else had the foresight.

ADVICE/REQUEST...At the Turning Blue ceremony you will leave the bleachers and approach your soldier who has to remain in formation...standing at attention. When you get to him is when he can 'be at ease'. This is when you'll be able to give him the warmest, biggest hug you've ever given him and place the Blue Cord on his uniform. **Now, this is actually more of a request than advice: PLEASE look around and see if there are other soldiers standing there 'at attention' because they have no family/friends there. I ask of you wonderful FOXTROT Company family members to approach these soldiers and tell them how proud you are..thank them for their service and see if they would like to wait for their drill sgt. to place their blue cord on them or if you could have the honor...most of these brave soldiers standing there with nobody around...will love you for this!!! I personally had the honor of placing the blue cord on my son's 'battle buddy' and will never forget his sincere words of, "Yes, Mam that would be real nice of you...Thank you Mam." By the way, his family ended up coming later in the day and were there for graduation..if not, I would have adapted him for the remainder of our time and had him hang out with us. A wonderful Army Pal of mine just had this experience and she put on several blue cords for soldiers and took them back to Uchee Creek for some homecooked meals. She said they were very appreciative. *** So there you go, that's my personal request that I tell everyone...thank you for keeping your eyes peeled. Hooah! Lisa

What to wear for the ceremonies (Turning Blue and Graduation)? I seen all types of dress, from more formal to very casual. However, I would say the majority went inbetween and wore what I would call business casual (khakis and button up shirt). I personally wore jeans both days and felt comfortable and never out of place. The Turning Blue Ceremony is when your soldier will be wearing his formal Class A uniform. Graduation they will wear their ACU (camos). However, I seen more people 'dress up' for graduation the other. I also noticed that wives and girlfriends seem to be the ones 'dressed up'. :) If you'd like, you can click on my icon, right next to this posting and go to my album marked Graduation and there will be many pics to look at... Wearing RED on FRIDAY is a great suggestion!!! Congratulations to your sons, husbands, boyfriends, etc and all their buddies in Foxtrot Co. One day closer to graduation! HOOAH!! Until tomorrow.... More than likely the first place you'll go on Sand Hill is the Rec Center (a.k.a the visitor center). Be on the lookout for the table that is selling portraits of your soldier in his Class A uniform (expensive, but worth every penny)...that being said, make sure to bring the PLASTIC it can get very expensive, quickly with all the DVDs and sourveniers you can buy. Then go into the auditorium, which is through a doorway by this photo table and get GOOD SEATS for the Family Briefing. There will be a slide show where the commander will introduce the captain and some of the drill sgts your soldiers have told you about. It is AFTER this that you'll be asked to walk to Kanell Field, where you'll sit on bleachers and watch as your soldier marches onto the field with the rest of his company for the first time. They start marching from the far corner of the field... Which leads me to my next advice for the day...*** I recommend that you bring binoculars, a blanket and an umbrella (depending on the weather) to this event. The blanket is multi-purpose, if it's a little chilly you can cover your legs (especially those wives and girlfriends who are dressed up in high heels and a dress..)or you can use it to sit on (those bleachers get to feeling hard after awhile). TO BE CONTINUED ON THE NEXT POST...

Hello everyone...I'm going on vacation starting the end of July and first part of August. I can't wait, we get to finally see my son Brandon...we're flying him from Fort Hood, TX to where we're vacationing in Arizona for the weekend. So after looking at my calendar I realized I should start my little tid bits of advice for your journey ahead...to Fort Benning and graduation. Here's my advice for today (with many to follow): When going to Turning Blue and Graduation make sure to leave EARLY so you get good parking, good seating and don't get caught in a traffic jam at the CheckPoint leading to Sand Hill...You'll need to make sure you have your driver's license ready at the checkpoints. I would recommend getting there early both days...ARRIVING a minimum of 1 hour early...not LEAVING your location with only 1 hour to go...Getting a good seat will get you great pictures! KEEP IN MIND, if you are coming from a different time zone MAKE SURE you set you clock/watches to reflect Eastern Time Zone, and if you're staying at Uchee Creek Campground, you are straddling two different time zones, so be aware! Tomorrow and the next I am captaining a relay race that stretches 130 miles, so I won't be able to check in. So be looking for more info starting on Monday and each day that follows (STAY TUNED....lol). Have a great day and even better weekend! Lisa

One important thing I've forgotten to ask...DO YOU WEAR RED ON FRIDAYS? If so...THANK YOU! If not, and don't know why...by wearing red you are showing your support for our brave military men and women. Since the day my son left my door step and got into the car with his recruiter I've worn my ARMY bracelet EVERYDAY and wear red on Fridays...and will continue to. This may sound weird, but it gives me a feeling of closeness. For more information about wearing red on Fridays please check out: http://www.snopes.com/politics/war/redfriday.asp

Families, you should be receiving information about graduation any time now. It'll have a small map and detail the events that will take place...Thursday will be Family Briefing, Turning Blue, Family Day Pass and Married Soldier/Spouse briefing...on Friday will be graduation. It'll list the location and times. Are you getting excited? I'll tell you, the emotions you'll experience at graduation will knock your socks off...it sure did me. In about a week I'll start posting recommendations of what to take with you and for your soldier...little tid bit of info that will hopefully make your trip easier. The countdown is ON! Hooah! Hello rrhwilson. Thank you for you comment. We just recently found out that our son is in F-Company 1-19 from a phone call that sadly we missed, but at least we have his voice on the answering machine to listen to. He did not give us a street address and we still have not received the form letter yet. My main question right now is when and how do I find the web page that will have what is going on in his company. Also he was in holding for about two weeks and just actually went to Sand Hill 06/29/07. How soon will the chaplan update the page. He also told us in his phone message to highlight the outside of the envelope that we will mail to him in green. What does that mean? To let you know, the phone message was short and not of very good quality. Proud parents (Vic and Debbie) of PFC Farrell Clark.

Hi armywife258. We are flying into Birmingham and won't be in Columbus until probably about 8 p.m. on Wed., 8/8, but let me know what the plans are. We are staying at the Marriott Courtyard. I hear that the guys probably aren't available on Thursday night, so that would also be a good night for all of us proud parents to get together to meet each other. Hey rrhwilson, I'm basically from Ruston, LA. So you hear much from your son? Will he continue his training at Ft. Benning, or go somewhere else. That's going to be a long drive, but we graduation bound in August.

laairmom 2007.06.25 at 20:19:38 PDT
freedom1ex, thank you and your son for his service to our nation. There are several training regiments at Benning. Do you know what your son's MOS will be? Once your son gets there he is able to make a call to say all is OK. He then spends about a week in processing. After that he gets sent to Sand Hill where their training begins. It is usually three weeks after they arrive at Sand Hill before they get a pass to the PX to make a phone call. You will get a letter in the first several weeks from his commander. This is a form letter that your son will fill in his personal info (RGT, BN, Co, RN number, etc) and address. Your son can write at any time, but he is not given an address until he gets to Sand Hill. Here is a link to give you an idea of what is going on: https://www.benning.army. mil/198th/ I am assuming that he is in the 198th training brigade and not one of the others. Graduation depends on which training brigade he is in. If he is in the 198th he will graduate 14 weeks after he first gets to Sand Hill. My son went in on Jan 22 and graduated on May 11. The 198th does basic and advanced training back-to-back. This is called OSUT (One Station Unit Training) other groups do basic first and then go to another place to do advanced. I understand how you feel. My son did not call or write until the form letter from the commander. Not knowing will become more bearable (somewhat anyway) as time goes on. This part of the Army never changes. I am glad you found this site. It can be a great comfort. My son was with B Co. You are welcome to read the 4000 plus posts we have put up since Feb. It takes about 5 minutes to load, but it will give you an idea of what the next several months will be like. THIS WILL BE THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE! Let me know how things are going with y'all. We dropped our son off at the recruiting office June 18, 2007 for his physical in Charlotte, NC and then head to Ft. Benning. According to a booklet he got he was supposed to get to call home and has not as of yet. We have so many questions. Does anyone know how to figure out when graduation will be if they know the date he got to Ft. Benning? We have read the other posts and love this site. You all have answered a lot of questions about the lodging, ect. that we really appreciate. We live in North Carolina so we are planning to drive. We would like any information you veterans can give us like when we might get information or mail from our son. We do not know what company or platoon or anything yet and are very anxious to learn anything you might be able to tell us. This is all new to us and we feel lost. It was really hard just sending him off to boot camp but we are very, very proud of him. The not knowing what is going on is really getting to us and we would appreciate any support and information you might be able to tell us. Thanks so much. Proud mom and dad of a new soldier.

Family Day/Turning Blue Ceremony is on a Thursday, with graduation on a Friday. I would recommend arriving on Wednesday, the earlier in the day the better so you can get aquainted with the surrounding and how long it'll take you to get to Sand Hill from where your staying at. Time off after graduation is always up in the air, depending on what your soldier's assignment is. If he's remaining at Fort Benning for additional training for Airborne/RIP after graduation he'll have to process in and then will be released for 72 hours. Others may be able to go home with you and report to their home base in 10 days or so...some may have to immediately get on a plane after graduation (only F Company grad Mar07 families experienced this scenerio...), so anything could happen. As graduation approaches I'll send out suggestions on what to bring to graduation and what to expect. I've learned that putting all the information out in the beginning I often have to repeat it several times before grad...so I'll wait 3 to 4 weeks out to start. :) Best wishes, Lisa

Lori, there have been changes at Benning with the IBT, which is now called the 198th INF TRAINING RGT, so this may not be accurate info... the men are not allowed to wear deodorant until the last two weeks or so of training. Apparently it attracts bugs and prohibits sweating. The Army wants none of either. hahaha Let me know if things have changed and y'all have a great Father's Day weekend. Matt is here with us this weekend, they have a three day weekend. Rhonda

Each company and platoon are different...depending on their drill sgts and how many disciplinary measures have to be made can determine what your soldier may or may NOT receive. My recommendation is to write your soldier and ask him to write you what you can or cannot send...their ds will let them know. It's best to ask first than to send and have your soldier disciplined by having to do a multitude of pushups. If they CAN get items here are some suggestions and popular items...flavored cough drops/two bags only...reason for this is because it's like candy, foot powder, cushion foot insoles to help with their shin splints, self-addressed stamped envelopes for writing letters back to you, deodorant, chapstick, clippings from the sports section of the news paper, and pictures from home of family and friends. Best of luck, Lisa

Close to base. When we were there they had road construction from Atlanta to Columbus so allow yourself extra time for travel. The traffic moved very slow. You all will have a great time! Carrie, if he just left the 30th AG where they in process the men it will be soon that you will receive a letter from the commander (each slodier writes when he wants to so there is no telling on that), but up to three weeks before they can make a call. At the end of what is called Red Phase, if all goes well and the men have earned it, they get a pass to go to the PX to get stuff and call home. The letter from the commander will tell you his address. If your son is married or put someone else down as a contact they will receive the letter from the commander so you can check with them. Hope this helps. If you need to, email me at acomputerwiz_nerd@yahoo.c om. Rhonda Proud Mom of PFC Matthew Parga-Manasse

Thank you proudmom32! Michael wrote and mentioned Family Day in week 9 specifically, so I'm not sure what he was talking about. I know that we would not be able to travel so far twice, tho, which is too bad. To all: I booked my tickets to Birmingham today, 6/5, Southwest is having a sale for those who fly on a Wednesday. You might want to check it out. The drive from Birm to Columbus is under two hours. They also offered the only non-stops from Phoenix, which will help greatly. We will be in Columbus Wed - Sat in hopes that we can spend some time with our boy! Lori, the Very Proud mother of Pvt. Michael Martinek #225, F.Co 2/58th.

Proud mom of Martinek- I'm not familiar with a Family Day in week 9...however, there is Family Day the day BEFORE graduation and its also the day of TURNING BLUE... At the end of week 9 the soldiers may or may NOT get a 36 hour pass; it depends on their drill sgts and if they have earned the priviledge or not. When on the 36 hour pass they can go into Columbus but will have to always wear their formal Class A uniforms and adhere to strict guidelines even when off base for that period. I do know that there have been several families who have gotten together with their soldiers during this time, but it's because they live close to the base in Georgia...because as stated there are no guarantees that they'll have this time off. I just thought I'd share some travel information as well. I will be flying into Atlanta on Wednesday, August 8 but I get in pretty late so I'll be staying the night in Atlanta and picking up my rental car at the airport at 8:00 Thursday morning. There is a free shuttle between the hotel and airport so I don't have to worry about transportation there. My rental car arrangements were made through carrentals.com and the total cost for Thursday through Saturday is only $74. I'll be staying at the Best Western only 3.5 miles from Fort Benning and because I am a dependent of military personnel I only have to show my military ID and I get a great discount making the room only $67 per night! (I made those arrangements at hotels.com) I got my plane ticket through Hotwire.com and roundtrip only cost $279. All in all, I think I got some great deals. I hope that is helpful. I posted several days ago info about lodging, but I'll post it again for everyone's convenience. Here is some information that I hope will get you started: you may stay on post at lodging or at a place called Uchee Creek Campground, which has nice houses and cabins for rent. Another option will be to get a hotel around Exit 10 on Highway 185. You can call Ft. Benning lodging and see what they have available at (706) 689-0067 or visit the internet site at the below location. http://benningmwr.com/lodging31905.htm. Lodging gets filled up quickly, so make your reservations as soon as possible. Good luck to all of you and a big Hooah! goes out to all your wonderful soldiers. Hello All! I flew into Birmingham, AL which is a little further away than Montgomery or Atlanta...but at the time is was worth the price for an extra hour of my time. I highly recommend staying at Uchee Creek...in one of their cabins. They have different sizes to choose from...and once again I would recommend going for the LARGE cabin. The cost is extraordinary at something close to $49.00 per night and sleeps like 8 people, with a full kitchen and BBQ on the back patio. Uchee Creek is located just off base, it has a wilderness feel to it, with wildlife to admire. Not only did I stay there and have recommended other families whom have graduated after us to stay there, but also when my son and his battle buddies would go on leave this is one of the places they stayed. In the past I have offered to share with other graduating companies my chronicles of my time at Turning Blue and Graduation. If you are interested I would gladly send it your way to give you a feel for what to expect... Send me an email at lpeterson@columbia.com and I'll send the chronicle to you. Pete's mom, my son Brandon is now stationed at Fort Hood, TX and doing well...thanks for asking. PATRIOT PRIDE, Lisa

Hi Lisa. Good to hear from someone close by-thanks for writing. My son is my "baby"... my girls are both older. We are flying out of Seattle since my girls live up there. I think I have decided to fly into Atlanta and rent a car unless you have better advice for me. I really couldn't decide if that would be more economical and easier than flying into Columbus since I would have to rent a car anyway. I also thought that since my 1 year old grandson is accompanying us it might be easier to get from Atlanta to Columbus by car rather than getting back on a plane. I don't know... I need to make reservations soon. The prices just went up $30 this week! I should have bought last week! Do you know about the base housing? My son told me in a letter I got today that everything on the base is nice so probably rooms would be too.??? Where did your son get stationed? My son is in the National Guard so I expect he will be coming back here after graduation. I'm so proud of all of our soldier boys!

Hi armywife258! I sent you an invite on webshots with my email address. Never tried that before, so hopefully it will work. To all: I think we are going to be brave and fly into Montgomery instead of Birmingham. It was a much better price by far, last time I checked. Anyone ever flown into that airport? Georgia in August. Oh boy. But hey, if the guys can make it through bootcamp, I can handle the humidity for 3 days! Right now in Phoenix we have 99 degrees and 6% humidity. Yep, it's a dry heat! Thanks to all for the good info. I check in all the time to see what I can learn. Lori, the very proud mother of Pvt. Michael Martinek #225, F.Co 2/58.

Hey Pete's mom, I'm from Vancouver, WA too! My son Brandon graduated from bootcamp in Nov 06 and you could say some of us are quite the veterans of this site...if you have any questions or concerns about flying back East or what to expect please don't hesitate to ask. I wonder if our kids know one another...I have an older son who's almost 21 (not in the military), and Brandon just turned 19 along with 3 younger ones...my oldest daughter is graduating from high school in a few days. rrhwilson Thanks for writing back. My son is 22. He has never been very outgoing, but is comfortable in his own skin. My grandson just turned 1 so it is going to be a real "trip" to take him on the plane for almost 5 hours. I am a little overwhelmed with all the plans and information all of this requires. You'd think I'd be handling it better since I am a teacher, but I have never traveled much and certainly not so far. pete'smom

Daffydi151, that stinks! This whole gas issue is a bummer. I filled up today to go down to Benning tomorrow to my son's graduation from Airborne School and it was just at 60.00. Lord, help us all! We went and got him last weekend so he could come home for Memorial Day on a 4 day pass. I think now you spend what was once the cost of an airline ticket for two trips inside the same state. haha! This is my first time to leave a message on this website. My son is in the 1st platoon and I wonder if there is anyone else out there with a soldier in the same platoon. When my son called last Saturday, he indicated that he had not really connected with any of the other guys yet. I am so proud of my son and all your "boys" too. Thanks for all the information shared. I live in Vancouver, WA but will be flying out of Seattle to Atlanta (my daughter and grandson are going too). I was going to buy tickets a couple days ago and wish I had because just yesterday the prices went up $30!

Yes, the first number of the roster number (RN#) will identify what platoon your soldier is in. Example, #324 would indicate that your soldier is in the 3rd platoon. If their numbers are close to one another #324 and #325 there's a good chance they are each others battle buddy. However, there's still a good chance even if they aren't in the same platoon that they will know who others are as well...just not as intimately as those in their own squad/platoon. Lori, One of the craziest things about graduation weekend is the not knowing if your soldier will have leave or if he will be one of the unlucky ones that will get on a bus and head to his station within minutes of graduation. There is no way of knowing that. My son was told he would be leaving immediately yet he ended up staying till Tuesday and flew to Alaska with the last group. Others were told they would have the weekend but then at the last minute had to leave. Some of those didn't have all their belongings at graduation and parents had to sacrifice precious minutes running after stuff. The best thing I can tell you is be prepared to have your soldier leave and if he doesn't count it as one of your blessings. If you happen not to stay as long his leave he'll use the extra time with buddies he's bonded with but are leaving for different stations. Our son wanted to see us but also wanted to spend time with guys he was parting ways with. They really make some lifetime friendships duing these months. Here to wishing you some extra time with your soldier! Barb, proud Mom of a US Infantryman, Verne Yoder trained in F-co March 07

Hi everyone! We will be flying from Phoenix AZ on Wed 8/8 (we spend 3 hours on time difference alone!)... and also heading home on Sat. Birmingham looks like the best bet right now, rate and travel time-wise. Has anyone flown into Montgomery before? It's as good a deal, but a much smaller airport I hear. Atlanta may be cheaper to fly from some markets (NOT Phoenix!), but watch the car rental costs. (They are twice the cost of getting a car in Birm or Montg). We are booked at the Marriott Courtyard in Columbus ... it's only 6 miles from the base and that will give us more options and room in case Mike has any free time. To the veteran parents: When will we know if our sons will have any leave that weekend? Hi Mary! What is your son's name? So many questions ...! Thanks to all for being here to answer them, Lori, the very proud mother of Pvt. Michael Martinek #225 F.Co 2/58.

WELCOME Lori PROUD Mom of Pvt Michael Martinek #225. Thank you and your son! We live just north of Atlanta so were able to drive. Uchee Campground looked good to us since we were staying until Sunday. Matt had leave so there were 4 of us staying. It was great having a kitchen, but there was a lot of driving. Matt's Dad & Uncle stayed at the Marriott and got a two bedroom suite which was VERY nice and had a full kitchen. Rhonda

Hi Marysmilez The Holiday Inn that we stayed at was located at 2800 Manchester Expressway Columbus, Ga 31904 Phone # is 706 324-0231. With our military discount, our nightly fee was $89 per night. Again, if you need a top notch motel, this might not be the place for you. But if you google the reviews for this particular Holiday Inn, the majority of people say what I said "Good enough for the purpose" We spent almost no time there except to sleep, and shower. Most of out time was spent out and about visiting the National Infantry Museum on the base etc. I also recommend the museum for a visit. Awesome We came in from Atlanta, which gives you an additional 1 1/2 hour drive south from the airport to the hotel. Another disadvantage, but we found that if we flew into the closest airport (Columbus) it was going to cost us twice as much since Atlanta is a major hub airport. Again, what we liked was the very easy access right to the base with no hassle.

Thank you all so much for all of the information. I looked into flights to Birmingham, AL and it is actually more expensive from Portland than just flying into Atlanta. I think I am going to stick with flying into Atlanta. I would like to know the number and location of the Holiday Inn Briansdad01 was talking about. I will also check into the lodging at Fort Benning and see what I can find out. Lori, I can confirm that the dates you have are correct. My son is also graduating at the same time. In fact, it looks like our sons are in the same platoon. Where are you flying from? I also am planning on flying in Wed. and staying through Saturday.

This is such a valuable resource for the families of every group of solidiers. Thank you for giving me more information than I have been able to find anywhere else! Can anyone confirm that graduation is Aug. 9 (Blue Cord Day) and Aug. 10 (graduation)? My son Brian Fuller Jr. graduated from A co.2/58 on 5/17, and 5/18. My wife got us reservations at the Holiday Inn On M....Expressway directly off of I-185. (I'm sorry, the name of the expressway escapes me) I believe it was exit 7 in or very near Columbus. It was fine. Not a five star hotel, but it was clean enough, the staff was incredibly nice, and there is a restaurant, and bar on premise. It suited our purpose just fine, plus, they gave us a "military discount" when we mentioned it was for graduation. It's only about 10-15 minutes from the gates of Benning, and easy access. A bonus was that my son wanted to get off of the base in the worst way, and he was glad to stay there. Lisa is right. Don't wait to make your arrangements. The Holiday Inn was full when we stayed there. The most important tip that I received was from A staff member named Christy at the Holiday Inn. (Super nice) When we checked in the day before Turning Blue, she strongly suggested that we go immediately (the day before)to get our visitors pass from the Visitor Center at the front gate. What a life saver. When we arrived at Benning (One and one half hours early, which I also suggest)we breezed past the visitor center with pass in hand, directly to the front gate. We could see that small parking lot of the visitor center was crazy with little parking, and people trying to squeeze in to get passes. What a pleasure to breeze past that. We got on base very early, but parked, and enjoyed our Dunkin Donuts coffee. Also if you get ther early, you can get t-shirts, hats, which get snapped up quickly, and photos of your soldier . They sold stuff right in the auditorium. If anyone is interested, I will look for the phone number of the Holiday Inn and post it.

If you are planning to attend your brave soldier's boot camp graduation, DON'T WAIT for your graduation packet information to come in the mail. If you do, it'll be too late to stay on base or get good airfare. Here is some information that I hope will get you started: you may stay on post at lodging or at a place called Uchee Creek Campground, which has nice houses and cabins for rent. Another option will be to get a hotel around Exit 10 on Highway 185. You can call Ft. Lodging gets filled up quickly, so make your reservations as soon as possible. Good luck to all of you...another note...You may want to arrive on Wednesday, the day before Family Day aka Turning Blue Ceremony which is on Thursday and stay until the weekend is over. Your soldier will probably be able to stay with you during this time...there's no guarantees of that, but is often the case. Best wishes, Lisa

Hey Mary, I too am from the Pacific Northwest. I live in Vancouver, WA but work in Portland, OR. When looking for flights and the closest airport you'll find Columbus, GA...but the most expensive. A lot of people fly into Atlanta. There are also inexpensive shuttle rides that leave the airport every 1/2 hour to Fort Benning. However, I found after lots of research that by flying into Birmingham, AL. It saved me over $200 roundtrip per ticket, and I only had to drive an extra hour... Another option to look at is Montgomery, AL, it's almost just as close as Atlanta. I hope this helps... Oh, and go to bookingbuddy.com to compare flight prices. I'll also send you info on lodging info...Lisa

Thank you very much for the information Lisa. I would not miss Chris's graduation for anything! I had a Hawaiian cruise booked for August 12th that I have cancelled. I can always go on a cruise but his graduation from basic training only comes once. I send my son cards, letters and pictures all the time. I know that he looks forward to his mail everyday. His graduation isn't until August 10th so I have time to prepare for it. It is such a big place that I'm afraid I'm going to get lost..LOL. I'm from Oregon and have only been on the west coast. It will definitely be an experience that I am looking forward to. God Bless our Troops!!

Hello Mary...WELCOME! To answer your questions...Yes, they stick to a pretty rigid training schedule. They will have 9 weeks of basic training and then AIT directly after that, which leads to boot camp graduation. As for mail...yes, sometimes it gets held. Right now the drill sgts have the tough job of breaking everyone in so they can build them up to become our Guardians of Freedom. It's my personal belief that the DSs hold the mail at times so 'home' doesn't interfere with the soldier's main focus and that is their training....once again that is my belief only. Continue to write your son, he'll love you for it. I wrote mine everyday... Also make sure to send lots of pictures from home; that's a big hit as well. Are you planning on attending Christopher's bootcamp graduation? If so us 'veterans' will give you LOTS of advice on where to stay, what to bring and what to expect. Please feel free to post any questions you may have...one of us will get back to you with the answer if we can. Hello All!! This is my first time at this site. My son just sent me a letter with the web address. My son, PVT Christopher Garibaldi is currently in F Company. I have been watching the Fort Benning website and watching the training schedule to learn what my son is doing from day to day. Can anybody tell me how accurate that training schedule is? It seems to be pretty accurate with the letters that I am receiving from my son. Also, it seems like it took forever for him to receive my first letter. Does it take a while to process the mail once it is received at Fort Benning? I appreciate all the help. Mary
