  • John, what an incredible album and story. Very sad that your family lost a husband, son, brother, uncle, but very happy fate put you in touch with people who could bring it all together!

  • Dear John, what a profound and heart touching album. A beautiful tribute to this handsome young man who gave his life for our freedom. So many sad stories like this of these brave young men. I was so pleased you got to visit his grave while you were in Europe. I saw the photos in Henri's album. I do not know how I missed this album but I am so glad I found it tonight! Take care...Leslie

  • A great tribute album to your uncle! I especially liked it because I'm into WWII history and nostalgia. I'm sorry I'm just now getting around to responding to your many kind comments on my WS "Weekly Challenge" entries. I've been traveling and away from WS for a few months. I just returned a few weeks ago and haven't had the opportunity, till now, to read my recent (and not so recent!) guestbook entries. I'm slowly, but surely responding to as many as I can. Thanks so much for your comments. They mean a great deal to me. Char*

  • What a story! Who would say there is no fate, or don't believe in it? Than you should take a look on my Croatia album even it is not that kind of story. It is colorful ancient village where God "said good night" (at that time). I can see the future... but if they ask me... I know many ancient stories about that stone made place and people who use to live there. maybe write few details. Have a nice trip to north countries (with many shot moments). I would be in Prague from 16-26 August, same wishes to myself.

  • John, this is absolutely the best incentive for doing genealogy that I have ever seen. I got my father started on it in the '80s and he did quite a comprehensive family tree in the past 25 years. I wish he'd seen this album and realized how important it was to answer the 5 Ws (who, what, when, where, and why) that actually make the story mean something. I do scrapbooking and also do that type of information on photos, Dad never got the point and died Dec 4th, 2006 in his 85th year. I can only continue so much on his tree as so many of the people are now gone. You have done the most incredible job on this album, John, you should be very proud! ~ Leslie/Vancouver Island.

  • I do not know what to say, other than to say Thank you for this montage of history. I do think that this album is a grand reminder that no matter where you go, there is always some one to step up and help others in need. With humble thanks and a somber thought for those who gave their all. God Bless.

  • Thanks for the World War II photos. I was a little girl during the war, had cousins and uncles in the service. All I can say is thank God for Buddy and all of the men and women that sacrificed so I could live a normal life. I had a cousin Buddy too that was in the Army and a cousin as a tailgunner, and two other uncles in the Air Force. What wonderful men they were. inutmeg

  • John, I've just finished looking at your photos. As an Army MP Staff Sergeant, assigned to 42d MP Group (Customs), I ran a border operations detachment field office in Schinnen, Limburg Province, The Netherlands. Our job was the interdiction of narcotics into Germany from NL. My wife and I visited the American Battlefield Cemetery at Margraten many times. • Congratulations, John, on this beautifully compiled series of photos and comentary whch tell a story of bravery and courage.. of fighting for a belief & conviction and of freedom's high price. I have spent time doing geneology research so I can appreciate how much effort went into the search for information about your uncle. I wasn't born until 1946 so don't really remember anything about the war. What I do remember is a lot about shortly after the war and the effects of the war with which families still struggled. My undle (my father's brother) was killed in the war too, leaving behind his wife and their infant son. John, I am so glad that you took the time to find this information and posted it so all might read and be reminded of the great gift of freedom that was won for so many people by the bravery and couorage of thousands of young men who gave their all to protect that freedom. With all my best regards and warm wishes to you ~~~ Jodi

  • This is an amazing story, which shows the power of the internet both for promoting global communication and understanding, and for garnering information from all over the globe. Thanks so much for sharing this story, which once again demonstrates the cruel fact that war deprives societies of young men in the bloom of youth, and families of cherished loved ones.

The fortunate ones came home and built a country and by doing so, put back together a large portion of the rest of the world. We simply have not done enough for them. Greetings from Florida, Paul.

  • Thank you John for this wonderful album which not only commemorates your uncle but all those who served. A cousin of mine was killed during the was and I remember as a little boy going to his burial in the veteran's section of the cemetary. I also had two uncles who served, and remember when they finally came home. They never spoke about the war, at least not in my presence. Maybe they thought I was too young to hear about it. I do remember one story, which we all considered funny, and it is odd that of all things this is one I remember, I hope it is not inappropriate here but I am going to tell it anyway. His troop was walking in a deserted area on a dirt road, and planes began strafing the road they, of course, jumped into a side ditch to save their lives, and lo and behold that ditch was a repository for human waste.!!!! They were covered with it and did not have the opportunity to wash for a couple of days. I salute them, the brave men who endured many things to save the world from those megolamaniacs at that time. • Thank you John for sharing this profoundly wonderful story with us!! All my kindest wishes for you and your family! "The Opening of Eyes That day I saw beneath dark clouds the passing light over the water and I heard the voice of the world speak out, I knew then, as I had before, Life is no passing memory of what has been, nor the remaining pages in a great book waiting to be read. It is the opening of eyes long closed. It is the vision of far off things seen for the silence they hold. It is the heart after years of secret conversing speaking out loud in the clear air. It is Moses in the desert fallen to his knees before the lit bush. It is the man throwing away his shoes as if to enter heaven, and finding himself astonished, opened at last, fallen in love with solid ground." ~ David Whyte - from Songs for Coming Home ~ bigmindcatalyst.com

  • Nice one, John. Approximately 410,000 American servicemen died in WWII.,(in Europe alone as I remember), a debt which can never be repaid, but shall always be remembered. Yours is the sort of album which I always like to see; more than just photographs (which essentially is what Webshots is all about) but history & remembrance, using the captions to tell us about it all. Thanks for the notes on my message board, I'll suss-out some poems for you, but the lyrics to "Where have all the flowers gone" is an excellent choice in any case. Keep up the work here; because as the time from WWII lengthens, people already are forgetting the sacrifices given, particularly in schools where it doesn't always figure in the curriculum. I tried to emphasise these sacrifices in one of my own albums, and have had some communication from one American paratrooper shown in a picture of WWII date (As you know!) Take care, and God bless. Mike.

  • Howdy John. This album brought tears to my eyes. A bridge too far, indeed. My mother and father and all my own uncles fought in WW2 in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. My dad was due to go on the third drop into Arnhem, but it was cancelled because of the carnage (and the SS Panzer troops on the ground). If it wasn't for your uncle and all the other brave men who gave their lives in this campaign, we'd all be speaking German today. This is a remarkable album. Thank you for sharing it with us - and reminding all of us of the debt we owe now and will always owe - Dave
