Fantastic set of photo's showing the human side of the ordinary soldiers experience of a war which has yet to be equalled in its level ferocity. Anyone who has been to war and experienced combat will tell you that all that goes through the mind of the average soldier is to return home alive. Any ideology quickly fades into the background under these circumstances. I salute and honour all these victims of circumstance regardless of nationality. I must just say though that its common knowledge that Stalin and his henchmen such as the infamous Beria made the Nazis look like a kindergaten outing and, as such, were able to throw countless millions into the meatgrinder.In my opinion, there is little or no glory in Russia's 'victory' during their Great Patriotic War. It was nothing more than mass murder commited by an insane Georgian ballbag who most likely would have been responsible for these deaths regardless of whether or not war had broken out. I'm a South African and I served in my countries defence force during the so called apartheid era. By some peoples definition, that makes me a racist criminal. I can assure you that that could'nt be further than the truth. We did what we had to do and most if not all of us had no intention of dying a 'glorious death for our fatherland'. Our lives and those of our buddies came first. Something which the armchair warrior seems unable to grasp. Why? Because they've never been there. Something for which they should be extremely grateful.

Bitte verteidigt diesen Soldaten nicht; er wurde einer Gehirnwaesche unterzogen und verhielt sich wie ein Roboter. Diese gehirnlose Killermaschine wurde trainiert Befehle auszufuehren, bis er bei Stalingrad ein Rueckschlag erlitt und erst dort merkte, dass er kein Uebermensch mehr war! Die Deutschen haben bekommen, was sie verdient haben. Naechstes Mal sollten die Deutschen zweimal darueber nachdenken bevor sie einen Fusstapfen auf fremdes Land setzen.

Showing a war inside out. My mother had lived during the WW2 in a vilage in Ukraine occupied by Germans. Now I can see what she was telling about this time from another perspective.
