The slides of Kasteel Middachten bring back many memories. I grew up in De Steeg, and learned my skating skills on the moat around the castle. I spent many happy hours there. I remember Anton Blom, who kept the ice clean (for a small fee of course). I remember Daantje Aalders who could skate like a pro. I remember how we kids were chased off the ice around five in the afternoon, "want de heer en mevrouw motten eten"; they apparently didn't enjoy the noise made by happy and excited kids. The castle and its location are special, filled with history and mystery. After many years (43) in Canada, I still have vivid meories of my years in De Steeg and its castle. Henk gGal
