Mr. Goggins, I have seen these photos several times in my lifetime. My Mam-Ma & Pap-Pa, Geneva (Allen)Hand & William Eugene (Buster)Hand, had similar pictures, who passed them on to my Mother, Peggy Williams (Hand) Also, my 2nd cousin, Patty Holsombac, who lives in Alabama, video-taped her collection of Marvel pictures. It's great that you've put these pictures up here. My Great-grandfater was B.F. Roden, and my grandfather was Calvin Roden (his youngest son). I'd love to talk to you about where you came across these various pictures. My family has some interesting stories to tell about this place, as my mother and her sister both grew up there. OUTSTANDING! I loved every picture. I pass by the old mine works from time to time and never knew there was such a history has you have documented here. I have saved and printed a couple pictures and will compare the old photo's to what I see now at the old #1 and #2 mine. I would love to know more about where the school, depot and shops were located in relation to the old mine. Thanks for all the pictures!

i came across these pictures looking for when my mother's home was built. both sets of my grandparents and my parents grew up there. i have heard many stories of what marvel once was but never seen pictures these are wonderful. i found a picture of my mother's home in there but still need a date as to when it was built. it was the marvel hotel. if anyone hasay information or more pictures to share PLEASE e mail me at beachbrze02@aol.com thanks so much

My grandmother is in one of these pictures, when she was dating my grandfather. They are awesume. I grew up around this place in a smaller town called Pearidge, ever summer and Christmas. These pictures are great. Thanks for sharing them with the world.

I love your pictures of the old Alabama towns and mines. My grandfather lived in Piper and worked in the mines there. My mother was born in Piper. Have anymore pics? I've goe a few new photo's of the ruins of the Marvel mines on my site.

I lived at Marvel from 1960-62. I was six years old when we moved away. My Father and Grandfather worked for Roden Coal. When we lived there the Roden home was still there. I had not seen pictures of Marvel as it used to be when the Mines were operating. Stevie Golden and I set the woods on fire once and they had to call the Rangers to put it out. I got the crap beat outa me.

How shocking to see my father-in-law's (Evri Barberi) picture in the baseball photo (back, lst on left. The photo's would have meant a great deal to him. He had a 19-yr-old brother die there; brother Frank worked in the mine. The father, Guiseppe (or Joseph) Barberi ran a grocery store but don't know the name of it. -Thank you for bringing all this alive....Emily Barberi

My cousin's last name is Liddle! My grandfather worked in the mines in Piper (I believe ) and my grandmother came from Marvel (not the same place I might add) My cousin's grandmother (aka Cookie) is STILL living in the area. All the roads have changed much over the years... Isn't Piper also known as Coleanor?
