  • Hi there, Just saw your site. My mother was born in Flat River in Sept. 1910. Her father was George Lawson and her mother's maiden name was Esther McClarney. My mom was Leona Lawson and her sisters' names were Elizabeth, Lula, Lucille and Carrie (who died in her early 20's), brothers were George & Harry, I believe. Grandpa Lawson owned some houses and rented them out. He was a very friendly man, so I'm told, as he was deceased by the time I was born in Detroit in the mid 1940's. Thanks for your albums! I've been to Flat River once as a teenager, driving through on our family's trip back to Detroit. It was tiny! FlatRiverLawson

  • My in-laws, Vernon and Alice (Allen) Estes, lived in Flat River. Thanks to photos, before he died, I was able to have him identify some of the places familiar to him. They attended Flat River H.S. and Eugene and Emerson Grade Schools, and attended the Methodist Church. His father, James Perry Estes worked at the St. Joe Lead Mine. If anyone has related information, I would love to hear from you. Jennifer estesg@erols.com

  • The best possible place to find lots of info of Flat River, is Dave Darnell in Desloge. He has been acquiring info for years and has written, with photos of all the area.

  • I have an old family album that belonged to my grandparents. Unfortunately, they both passed away before the album was found. Several of the pictures were made by a photographer in Bonne Terre and Flat River at the turn of the century. I've begun a search and seeing pictures of Flat River has inspired me to look further in that direction.

  • What a nice journey into the past! My grandparents lived in Flat River and I spent MANY happy days and weeks there in the 50s and 60s. I knew principal Clarence Cochrane quite well, as he went to my grandparents' church. Thanks so much! Earl Dunbar

  • Thanks for posting the picture of Flat River Bank. A long time ago a family member robbed that bank. Is there any history on bank robberies in Flat River? danjconway@hotmail.com

  • Wow! What a great trip! The views of (1940s) Main Street show Flat River as it was when I first saw it. I loved seeing (Mrs. Fowler and Ms. Silsby) two of my Emerson school teachers. Then there was the bank where, as a child, I opened my first savings account. The sight of my old high school flooded to my mind with all of the sights and sounds that echoed through those halls. But best of all is my memory of a sweet kiss that was shared there. The memories of my years in Flat River (1946-1957) are like warm honey to my soul. They ever sweeten my life.

  • The pictures of the teachers setting at table remind me of my days at Emerson School. Mrs. Fowler and Ms. Silsby were teachers there also.
